Center for Child Development
We help children to feel mentally strong and self-confident. We primarily work in schools throughout Delaware.
The Center for Child Development™ (CCD) is Delaware's largest provider of children's mental health services. We are a private practice focused on the emotional and mental health needs of children and their families. Additionally, we provide services in our Newark office. We work to help children improve their behavior, express emotions appropriately, and help parents to feel confident in their parenting skills.
You want to create a healthier family than the one you grew up in, yet you don't know how. Are you unintentionally passing down trauma? Tap in to learn more.
Most people who grew up in # # # unhealthy families want to do better with their own families, but don’t know how. They struggle to know what is healthy versus repeating unhealthy patterns. Stay tuned to my series on what makes a healthy family.

Supporting your child’s mental health doesn’t mean keeping them happy all the time. It means helping them understand their emotions, work through challenges, respect boundaries, repair relationships, and know they are still loved—even when they make mistakes.
Parenting is hard, but you don’t have to figure it out alone. Join the CCD Parent Hub for practical, clinician-created tools designed to help you navigate the difficult moments and build a healthier connection with your child.

Loneliness doesn’t always look like sadness.
Sometimes it looks like the child who says school was “fine” but never mentions a friend.
The one who eats lunch quickly.
The one who always says, “It’s okay.”
The one who watches other kids play and tells you they didn’t want to join anyway.
And sometimes, they really do believe they have no friends.
As parents, it is hard to know when to step in—and how to help without taking over.
Your child does not need you to solve every social problem for them. But they do need to know they are not alone, that you are listening, and that there is a next step.
Inside the CCD Parent Hub, you’ll find free tools to help you:

Two phone calls no parent wants to get.
“Your child is being bullied.”
And the one that often comes with a lot more shame:
“Your child is the one doing the bullying.”
After decades of working with children and families, I can tell you that parents on both ends are usually scared and trying to figure out what to do next.
That’s why we created three different bullying resources inside the CCD Parent Hub.
If your child is being bullied: Learn the warning signs kids hide, what to say when they finally tell you, and how to approach the school — including a five-step escalation plan with actual email language.
If your child is doing the bullying: Learn what may be driving the behavior and how to hold your child accountable without shaming them. Your child can do something harmful without being a bad kid. We need to stop the behavior AND understand what’s underneath it.
And for kids: “My Backup Plan” helps children know exactly what to do when bullying happens — who to tell, what to do in the moment, and why reporting is not tattling. Printable versions are available for elementary and middle school students, including pocket cards for their backpacks.
October is Bullying Prevention Month.
We’ll hear a lot about bullying. I want families to have more than information. I want them to know what to do next.
All three resources are free at ccdparenthub.com.

The size of a child’s reaction often tells you more about what happened before the moment than what happened in it.
A banana breaks and the child falls apart. Not because the banana is that important, but because by the time it broke, they had no capacity left.
That’s the part adults often miss.
Kids spend a lot of their day managing more than we realize. They hold it together at school. They deal with noise, transitions, frustration, disappointment, hunger, being tired, being corrected, and having very little control over what happens next.
Then one more thing happens, and they’re done.
That’s why I tell parents: stop focusing so much on the banana and start paying attention to the bucket.
If the bucket is already full, it doesn’t take much to make it overflow.
And once you understand that, you stop asking, “Why is my child behaving like this over something so small?” and start asking, “What has been building up all day?”
That question will take you much further.
Our clinical team just published a free article about what’s actually happening during a meltdown, what helps in the moment, and how to start managing the bucket instead of constantly reacting to the overflow.
I’ll put the link below.
If you know a parent who needs this reframe, send it to them.

Supporting a child can come with a lot of “What do I do now?” moments.
At home. In the classroom. During a meltdown. After a difficult school day. When anxiety takes over or a child just can’t put what they’re feeling into words.
The CCD Parent Hub and CCD Educator Portal were created by Lisa Savage with those real moments in mind—giving parents, caregivers, and educators practical tools they can turn to when they need them.
Because the people caring for our children deserve support, too.
