This Thursday, contributors to the new book, "Elizabeth Detention Center: A Social History of Confinement in the United States, 1993-2025,” will be speaking outside the Elizabeth Detention Center, in Elizabeth NJ.
---
"On June 18, 1995, people detained at the Elizabeth Detention Center rebelled against the harsh and unfair treatment they had been receiving from Esmor Correctional Services, the private contractor hired by the former Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS). To mark this anniversary, Rutgers University Press is publishing the new book, “Elizabeth Detention Center: A Social History of Confinement in the United States, 1993-2025.” Several of the book’s contributing writers will attend and speak at the launch event.
The recent protests at Delaney Hall demonstrate that New Jersey is ground zero for resistance to immigration detention in the United States. And this has been true for more than three decades. The book highlights local advocacy against detention in New Jersey, a state that is too often overlooked compared to neighboring New York, even though it has the largest percentage of a foreign-born population in the Northeast."

All roads have led to this. This moment is the result of years of ongoing struggle. Entire generations have grown up in uncertainty, with families living under the constant fear of separation. Now, that struggle has brought TPS families to the Supreme Court. For many, this is a turning point that could determine whether more than 1.3 million families stay together or are torn apart. Decades of contributions and lives built in this country are on the line. This is a life-defining moment for hundreds of thousands of families. With anxiety, but without fear, the TPS community stands resilient, united, and determined.
