Paul Robeson (1898–1976) was one of the most remarkable and complicated figures in 20th-century American life — an athlete, singer, actor, and political activist whose career was ultimately upended by Cold War politics.

Early life and achievements
Robeson was the son of an escaped slave turned minister. He attended Rutgers University on an academic scholarship, where he was an extraordinary student (valedictorian, Phi Beta Kappa) and a two-time All-American football player, despite facing intense racism from teammates and opponents. He went on to Columbia Law School and briefly practiced law before leaving the field after experiencing racial discrimination at his firm.

Performing career
Robeson became famous for his deep, resonant bass-baritone voice and his commanding stage presence. He's especially remembered for:

His performance of "Ol' Man River" in Show Boat, which he later revised over the years to make the lyrics less deferential and more assertive of Black dignity.
His acclaimed portrayal of Othello — including a landmark 1943 Broadway production, one of the first times a Black actor played the role opposite a white cast on Broadway, and it became the longest-running Shakespeare production in Broadway history at the time.
Films like The Emperor Jones and Song of Freedom.
Activism and politics
Robeson was a passionate advocate for civil rights, labor rights, and anti-colonial movements worldwide. He spoke out against fascism, supported the Spanish Republic during its civil war, and became increasingly vocal about racial injustice in the U.S. and imperialism abroad.

He also expressed admiration for the Soviet Union, partly because he felt he experienced less racism there than in the U.S. This, combined with his activism, made him a target during the McCarthy era. In 1950, the State Department revoked his passport (he couldn't travel abroad for about eight years), he was blacklisted, his concerts were canceled or picketed, and his income collapsed. He was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee and refused to answer questions about Communist Party membership, invoking the Fifth Amendment.

Later life
His passport was eventually restored in 1958 after a Supreme Court ruling, and he resumed some international performing, but his health declined (he suffered from depression and other ailments, possibly worsened by the stress of surveillance and persecution) and he largely withdrew from public life in the 1960s until his death in 1976.
