Getting your real estate license might seem overwhelming, but here’s exactly how it works, step by step:

Check your state’s requirements.
Every state is different. Most require you to be 18+ with a high school diploma or equivalent.

Complete the required coursework.
This is usually around 40–180 hours depending on the state. You can often do it online, on your own schedule.

Pass the licensing exam.
It’s typically split into a national section and a state-specific section. You’ll need a passing score on both.

Submit your license application.
This includes a background check and fingerprinting in most cases.

Find a sponsoring broker.
You need to hang your license with a broker to legally practice real estate.

Start your real estate career.
From here, it’s about learning by doing, and continuing to grow with CE courses along the way.

Reminder: You don’t need a degree or years of experience to get started.
You just need to take the first step.
