Hulk Hogan did the unthinkable. The biggest hero in wrestling turned his back on the fans and joined Scott Hall and Kevin Nash to form the New World Order.

No one saw it coming.

Hogan’s heel turn wasn’t just one of the greatest moments in wrestling history — it helped launch the Monday Night Wars, paved the way for the Attitude Era, and changed the business forever. In many ways, it was a viral moment before social media even existed.

Thirty years later, it’s still the gold standard for every heel turn that followed.

On this day 30 years ago, Scott Hall’s big surprise showed up on WCW Monday Nitro, in the form of Kevin Nash. Hall, the former Razor Ramon in the WWF, was first to make a shocking appearance in WCW two weeks earlier. Now, Diesel had joined him in this invasion.

Hall and Nash would eventually team up with a newly heel Hulk Hogan a month later at Bash at the Beach to form the New World Order. But those weeks with just Hall and Nash starting a guerrilla war with WCW was some of the best pro-wrestling television of the 1990s.

Who could forget one episode of Nitro ending with Charlotte police officers in the ring, hands on their guns, attempting to ward off the chair-wielding Hall and Nash? Absolute cinema, as the kids say today.

If Hall gave the nWo its swagger and charisma, the 6-foot-10 Nash brought an easy coolness, dark humor and irreverence to the group. A news and pop culture ju**ie, “Big Sexy” had his finger on the pulse of what was hip and fresh at the time — and knew how to leverage those things toward making the nWo the most influential storyline and faction of all time.

The NBA Finals begin tonight, what could be a magical series between the Knicks and Spurs. Knicks star point guard Jalen Brunson would probably appreciate this post since he’s a massive pro wrestling fan.

Twenty-eight years ago, the NBA Finals pitted Michael Jordan’s Chicago Bulls against Karl Malone’s Utah Jazz. The Bulls eventually won the series, of course, but the rivalry gave birth to another compelling matchup: Malone against the Bulls’ Dennis Rodman.

A few weeks after the Bulls won the NBA championship, Rodman and Malone locked up in a pro-wrestling match. Rodman, a member of the nWo, teamed with Hollywood Hogan against Malone and “Diamond” Dallas Page at WCW Bash at the Beach 1998.

How it all came together was crazy.

Page attended a Jazz game in Houston earlier that season. Malone spotted him in the crowd and threw up DDP’s signature diamond cutter hand gesture. The two had never met before. Page and Ross Forman, the WCW official he was with at the game, had no clue Malone was a wrestling fan. It turned out, the NBA star was a huge one. He was glued to the TV every Monday night — when the Jazz weren’t playing, of course.

Scott Hall altered the course of professional wresting history 30 years ago today. He showed up unannounced on WCW Monday Nitro, during a match. He came through the crowd in street clothes, grabbed a microphone, got in the ring and cut one of the most memorable promos in the history of the industry.

“You know who I am. But you don’t know why I’m here.”

He was Razor Ramon. Or at least that’s who people recognized him as: the extremely popular and charismatic WWF character. But this was not the WWF — it was the WWF’s biggest rival WCW. WWF Monday Night Raw was playing on another channel that night.

Was this a top star from the competition invading WCW on behalf of the WWF? That’s certainly what it appeared like to many. It was 1996, there was no social media, and word didn’t travel at even a fraction as fast as it does now.

Of course, in reality, Hall was no interloper. Instead, his shocking appearance was the start of one of the greatest angles and storylines in the history of professional wrestling. The ex*****on of what became the New World Order shifted the entire industry’s economy for years and gave us some of the most iconic moments in wrestling history.

It all started that night, 30 years ago in Macon, Georgia.

My biggest regret in writing Say Hello to the Bad Guys: How Professional Wrestling’s New World Order Changed America was I never got to interview Scott Hall. He was the heart and soul of the nWo and, to me, the greatest pro wrestler who never won a world title. Unfortunately, I was still in the proposal phase of the book when Hall passed away in 2022.
