5 Highlights from Trees & Utilities 2026
What happens when utility vegetation management professionals from across the country gather? New ideas, meaningful conversations, and plenty of reasons to be excited about where our industry is headed.
The Xylem Tree Experts team was proud to be part of this year’s Trees & Utilities Conference in Portland. Here are five moments that made the week memorable:
1. Celebrating James Wendt
We were incredibly proud to see James Wendt receive the Will Nutter Silver Shield Award, which honors his commitment to advancing safety and positively influencing safety culture throughout our industry.
2. Sharing Safety Lessons from the Field
Ray Crump took the stage for “Weathering the Storm: Maintaining Safety Standards During Natural Disasters,” sharing insights into maintaining situational awareness, recognizing evolving risks, and making disciplined decisions during high-pressure disaster response.
3. Connecting with Customers and Colleagues
Our leadership team had the opportunity to reconnect with longtime colleagues, spend time with clients, and build new relationships with professionals across the utility vegetation management industry.
4. Learning from the Industry
From safety and workforce development to technology and vegetation management best practices, the conference provided our team with new ideas and perspectives to bring back to Xylem.
5. Celebrating the UVM Community
Most importantly, Trees & Utilities reminded us what makes this industry special: people willing to share knowledge, learn from one another, and work together to advance utility vegetation management.
One conference. One minute. Take a look at some of our favorite moments from Trees & Utilities 2026.
Thank you to the Utility Arborist Association, the Arbor Day Foundation, our clients, colleagues, and everyone who made this year’s event one to remember.

⛈️ Storm work can change quickly, and crews need to be ready to change with it.
At this year’s Trees & Utilities Conference, Ray Crump of XKIG’s Operational Excellence team shared how recognizing changing conditions, reassessing hazards, and adjusting the plan can help crews maintain control during storm response.
Our latest blog takes those lessons into the field and explores what they mean for utility vegetation management crews working in unpredictable conditions. 🌳
