Longtime customers Kyle and Kallen stopped by the shop today with their pups, Bay and Bus!
We were especially happy to congratulate Kyle, who found out this week that he’ll be headed to Boston in April. He’s worked incredibly hard for many years, and we’re so excited for him.
And you’ll get to see Kallen this weekend, as she’ll be pacing the 2:15 group at the Crawlin’ Crab Half Marathon.

Meet the Arahi 9
The Rundown

A surprisingly sleek stability shoe.

Anything but your average stability shoe, the Arahi 9 maintains a secure ride while using inconceivably soft materials. The secret lies in our enhanced H-frame™ technology. A stabilizing system that combats overpronation while providing a smooth entry into the gait cycle, Hoka has paired this secure base with an engineered mesh upper crafted with tighter mesh on the medial side for enhanced support. The result? A streamlined stability shoe with unprecedented cushioning.

Meet Tristan!!

What first got you into running?

I got curious if I could do a 5k and at the 2024 Breathe n Run, I found out I could. Barely. It took
everything I had, however I was pretty sure I could do better next time (it was a low bar). Since I
already had Big Blue set for the following week, I went into that to prove myself right. My
running endeavors were supposed to end there, but I met the SPARC folks and the peer
pressure was serious. 26 months later... I’m still here.

What’s your favorite local route or race, and why?
Pretty sure I'm supposed to say that would be our Colley Run Crew routes. Otherwise, Noland
Trail is the right distance and visually appealing, so I like that a lot. My favorite race is probably
Crawling Crab because it's only like 10 minutes away. It's the one time I don't have to get a hotel
or wake up at like 4am.

What’s one of your most memorable running moments?
The Frostbite Foot Race 8k. I'm not sure why I signed up for a race in Iowa in the middle of
January, but I did. 15 degrees (felt like -5), super windy, heavily snowing. And I couldn't even
really run it because the weather made the roads icy. So I just trotted through it... Hating every
step. Good times.

What’s your favorite way to refuel or recover after a run?
Cracker Barrel and a nap is always a winning combination after an event. With a shower in the
middle, of course. If it's a non-event run, few things top Doritos and a Gatorade.

What is your next running goal?
Coach Dex probably put it best when he said I’m one of the most unserious, serious runners he
knows. I’m not much of a goal person. There's a lot of, “just show up and see how it goes.” But I
guess a goal I have is to keep doing this as long as I want to. Rather than stopping because my
body said so.

What’s a running tip or piece of advice you’d share with newer runners?
Nobody else matters. I don't think about how fast she can run or how far he can run. I just mind
my own business and do whatever makes sense to me. And it seems to be working out.

Tell us something about yourself that people may not know
I’d tell you how much I've spent on running shoes in the last year, but even I don't know...
Something you may not know is that I have never done a full marathon and plan to keep it that
way. They take up so much time, you know? Hm. Does that count as a goal?

Meet Lydia!

What first got you into running?
Growing up, I was a swimmer. Running was hard, and being in the water came more naturally to me. I didn't start running until my husband (newlyweds at the time) went to basic training. I was finishing my last semester of grad school, and I set up a meetup where my friends could come together at a local track to run together. This was before run clubs were a thing! Looking back, I realize that running was a stress relief strategy and has been a great outlet since then, even though it's still hard.

What’s your favorite local route or race, and why?
My favorite shorter distance local race is the Resolution 5k the Tidewater Striders put on at the boardwalk on New Year's Day. This year, it was freezing, but you get a really cozy pullover instead of a shirt. Plus, you get to hang out at Murphy's and enjoy a buffet style meal and drinks. I've met quite a few people this year by going to many run club meet ups, so I look forward to the post race hang out.

What’s one of your most memorable running moments (funny, tough, or inspiring)?
A memorable running moment (or rather, moments) was during what I call "Shamrock Season" January through March. The FOMO run club always meets up at Murphy's for Saturday long runs for everyone getting ready for the March race. This year, I had a half in April, so meeting up with them to run down to 64th street into First Landing or down General Booth towards the aquarium helped with the longer mileage. During one of the runs, I had 5 miles to do, but I ended up going 8 because the ladies I was running with were such good company!

What’s your favorite way to refuel or recover after a run?
After these hot summer runs, I've gotten in the habit of immediately going inside to the air conditioning and laying on the floor with my water. I slowly stretch until I've cooled down and mostly stopped sweating. Sometimes my husband or son will join me on the floor to hang out and chat about the day, since I usually run right after I get home from work.

What is your next running goal?
I have been experimenting with a couple goals for next year to see which direction I should go. I entered the lottery for both the NYC and Tokyo marathons, but it wasn't meant to be yet. I really enjoy the half marathon distance, so I want any distance further than that to be memorable and fun.
I've started cycling again this year. It works as cross training for my running, but it also makes me want to start doing triathlons again. I participated in a couple sprint triathlons ten years ago when I worked at a multisport store where I was part of their triathlon club. I honestly can't believe it's been that long! I joined a group ride to try it out again, and I was so nervous. Running is still the area I have to work the most at, so my goal is to get faster so I don't get passed so much when I get to the run portion of a triathlon. I also need to figure out how to use my time wisely to train both while also keeping up with strength training, and eventually add in swimming again.

What’s a running tip or piece of advice you’d share with newer runners?
This may be controversial, but I sometimes still consider myself a beginner runner since I just started running again last year. So to those just starting their running journey, I will say this- it truly is a journey. It's also your own personal journey. You can't compare your running abilities to someone who has been running for years. I have to remind myself of this often.

Tell us something about yourself that people may not know.
My instagram niche is mostly about running and cycling. That's mainly what people online see because I want to inspire others to start moving their body. I don't often share about my career as an elementary school teacher because I think children shouldn't be publicly posted on social media and I respect their privacy. I also don't share my son's name or face on my public accounts, even when he joins me on runs. Instead, you see a lot of me running, which proves you can run, too!
