LIFE: Leaders Involved in Futures and Empowerment LIFE is a program for young African-American men ages 16-29 that have sex with other men.

LIFE doesn’t require you to label yourself as “gay” to participate in our activities. We believe that men can enjoy sexual relationships with men only, women only and both men and women. What LIFE is focused on is helping young men who are sexually active with other men have safe and fulfilling relationships, experience personal growth and live a healthy life. LIFE is funded through a cooperative agreement that ACCESS AIDS Care has with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an HIV prevention initiative. Both agencies realize that in order for young men to protect themselves and others from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections that knowledge, skills, and support from their communities needs to occur. LIFE’s purpose is to deliver prevention in a holistic framework that accounts for a young man’s physical health, but also his mental, spiritual, social, environmental and emotional health. LIFE seeks to build a community of young men that can lead the fight against HIV for the next generation coming of age. Mentoring young men who are having sexual relationships with other men is an important element of what we do and our purpose. Imagine the difference for a young teen to be able to talk to an older peer about his feelings, fears, and behaviors, instead of feeling isolated because of his sexual attraction to other men.

What does the future of LGBTQ+ healthcare look like?

That question was at the center of the GLMA Conference on LGBTQ+ health, where our CEO, Stacie Walls, joined healthcare leaders and advocates from across the country.

The opening message was one we know well: Housing is healthcare. A safe, stable place to live directly affects whether someone can manage medications, keep appointments, recover, and stay connected to care.

Dr. Demetre Daskalakis also challenged attendees to reimagine LGBTQ+ health and HIV prevention. The public health system will not return to exactly what it was—and that gives us an opportunity to build something better than what came before. Something that works for more people and better supports the organizations doing the work.

That is the work ahead of all of us.

And because every conference needs a little joy, comedian Kristin Key stopped by to raise money for the Le***an Health Fund. 🌈

Nervous + Understood

“…introducing a new daily pill into my routine is crazy work.”

David is 25, black, gay, and already taking PrEP. He had written off DoxyPEP because he thought it meant taking another pill every day. Learning that it can be taken after s*x gave him something new to consider.

Su***de prevention starts long before a crisis.

It looks like affordable, affirming mental health care. A safe place to live. Food in the kitchen. A doctor who respects your identity. A workplace where you do not have to hide. Friends who notice when you have gone quiet. A community that makes room for you before you have to ask.

Rejection, discrimination, isolation, violence, and barriers to care create risk. Acceptance, stability, connection, and access to affirming support help protect lives.

That is why su***de prevention belongs in all of our work: housing, health care, mental health, food access, advocacy, and community building. It is not only what happens at the moment of crisis. It is the daily work of making life more livable, more kind, more joyful.

This month, let’s do more than tell people to reach out. Let’s become easier to reach.

If you or someone you know needs support now, call or text 988 for free, confidential support 24/7.

A seat at the table can do more than bring people together.

On Tuesday, September 29, Dining Out For Life restaurants across Hampton Roads will donate 33% or more of sales to LGBT Life Center.

That support helps people stay housed, access HIV care and prevention, put food on the table, and connect with affirming healthcare.

All you have to do is choose a participating restaurant, invite your people, and show up.
