Gray skies couldn't dampen this crew's spirit! 🌧️🗑️💙

This past Saturday, alongside our friends at and the International Coastal Cleanup, more than 30 amazing volunteers hit Colley Avenue to help protect our local waterways. Together, we removed an incredible 158.5 pounds of trash before it could make its way into Knitting Mill Creek, the Elizabeth River, and Chesapeake Bay!

Thank you to everyone who showed up and proved that a little gloomy weather is no match for a community that cares about cleaner, healthier waters. 🌎✨

Norfolk Southern celebrates completion of Elizabeth River shoreline restoration 10/07/2026

Norfolk Southern has completed a major living shoreline restoration at its Lambert’s Point property, transforming 1,500 feet of Elizabeth River shoreline with new marsh, oyster reef and native trees.

The project will help protect the shoreline from erosion and rising waters while improving water quality and creating valuable habitat for wildlife. It’s also a great example of the role businesses along the Elizabeth River can play in restoring and protecting the river we all share.

We’re proud to celebrate this milestone with our partners at Norfolk Southern and show what it looks like to Do Something Beautiful. Learn more by watching WTKR News 3's story:

This great blue heron knows when it's best to stay above the waterline. Floodwaters can contain hidden hazards, bacteria, and debris, so admire the view from a safe distance and avoid walking, driving, or playing in flooded areas.
