As we step into a new week, let’s pause for a moment to center ourselves for the week ahead.

Gardening is one of my favorite hobbies, and every year I’m reminded that long before flowers bloom, there are months of growth happening beneath the surface.

Roots are strengthening underground. Tiny shoots are forming where no one can yet see them. On the surface, it may look like nothing is changing, but so much is happening underneath.

Marriage growth often works in a similar way.

When you’re working on your relationship, it can be easy to become discouraged when progress feels slow or when you can’t immediately see change in your spouse. But growth rarely happens overnight. More often, it happens through small, consistent efforts over time.

In today’s blog, I’m sharing practical thoughts on how we can remain patient and hopeful while our spouse is growing beneath the surface. 🌱

There are seasons in marriage where it can slowly begin to feel like you’re living more as roommates than deeply connected partners.

Life becomes about schedules, responsibilities, bills, errands, children, and simply trying to get through the week. Conversations revolve around logistics instead of emotional connection. Before you know it, the relationship starts feeling completely different than it used to.

What makes this season especially difficult is that many couples can remember how things used to feel. You look back at old photos, old memories, old versions of yourselves, and you grieve the closeness that once came more naturally.

And while this season is incredibly common, that doesn’t mean it’s easy.

This doesn’t need to be your forever. The two of you can reconnect, intimacy can rebuild, and emotional closeness can return. However, that doesn’t just happen. It requires intentionality.

If you’ve found yourself in the “Roomate Season” with your spouse, now is the time to intentionally prioritize connection. If you’re not rowing, you’re drifting, so it’s time to start intentionally rowing back to one another.

Through our Marriage 2.0 Intensives, Mark and I have helped hundreds of couples, who are in a very similar place you are, regain connection and joy in their relationship.

Don’t wait. See how an Intensive could make a meaningful difference in your marriage: https://jillsavage.org/hope-renewed-intensive-retreat/

One of the more discouraging feelings in marriage is when it seems like you’re the one doing the growing while your spouse is stuck in the same patterns they've always been in.

You begin noticing your own healing, your own awareness, your own effort to communicate differently.

It can become tempting to look at your spouse through the lens of frustration instead of compassion.

However, growth in marriage is rarely perfectly synchronized.

There are seasons where one person becomes aware sooner, processing relational dynamics differently and feeling more motivated to change. While that can feel lonely at times, it’s important not to let your growth turn into quiet resentment or superiority.

It's most important that you take full responsibility for your own healing and growth, while inviting your spouse into the same process but giving them time and space for that to happen.

Consistent, open communication can invite someone toward growth far more effectively than criticism, pressure, or talking down to them ever will. ❤️

Have you ever noticed a tendency in yourself to put your own wants before the needs of others?

If we’re honest, that’s not an easy thing to admit. Most people don’t naturally think of themselves as selfish. And yet, when we slow down and truly examine our hearts, selfishness is something we all wrestle with at times.

That’s why we wanted to share how addressing selfishness is having an impact in our life, tell a story about when this showed up in Mark’s life a couple weeks ago, and offer practical tips that everyone can use to tackle selfishness.

In this episode, you’ll hear:
• How avoiding sacrifice can cause us to miss blessings
• Four steps to address selfishness
• How self-care is different from selfishness

When a relationship is in crisis, many couples simply hope things will eventually smooth themselves over. However, the longer painful patterns go unaddressed, the deeper the disconnect becomes.

Crisis seasons require intentional action.

Sometimes taking action looks like asking for support, inviting wise counsel in, or creating intentional space to work through what has been avoided for too long.

Ignoring the pain doesn't heal it, but facing it honestly can become the beginning of real restoration.

If your marriage is currently hanging on by a thread (or pretty close to it), we want to invite you to join us for a Marriage 2.0 Intensive.

You’ll return home with a renewed sense of understanding and commitment in your marriage along with practical tools and strategies to increase connection and understanding in your relationship.

There are seasons where growth doesn’t come from adding more to our lives, but from having the wisdom and courage to let something go.

As you step into this week, may this prayer be an invitation to loosen your grip on the things God may be asking you to release. 🙏

After working with a couple through our Marriage 2.0 Intensive, it's incredibly meaningful to see couples experience shifts they once thought were impossible.

Stories like this one show us that healing is possible. Reconnection can happen. When a couple has time away from the busyness of life to truly get to the root of what we're experiencing, they have the space to find the path back to one another.

If your marriage is “hanging on by a thread” (or you want to make sure it doesn’t get there) we invite you to consider an intensive with us: https://markandjill.org/intensive

It's powerful to hear what people have said after experiencing a Marriage 2.0 Intensive. Things like:

👉 "This was the best weekend I've had with my wife since we've been married."

👉 "We haven't felt this connected in over 20 years. Thank you!"

👉 "You guys made the weekend so comfortable for us. Thank you for being safe to talk about anything and thank you for your warm, welcoming hospitality."

👉 "My resentment is gone. I feel so close to my husband now. Thank you for showing us the way!"

If you’ve ever wondered what a typical day during an intensive looks like, we shared more on our blog: jillsavage.org/day-of-marriage-intensive/

Do you have deep pain you don’t talk about because it’s buried under bitterness, worthlessness, or loneliness?

It’s time to unburden your heart and clear out the emotional baggage that has been hindering you from fully living free in Christ.

My friend, Laurie Davies, knows what it’s like to feel trapped by the emotions that can build up in our hearts.

Laurie is a writer, speaker, and lay counselor who helps women deal with their “emotional accumulation.” She is the author of the new book, “Emotional Hoarding: Letting Go of the Stuff That Keeps You Stuck,” in which she offers practical help for decluttering our souls of unprocessed feelings.

In this episode, you’ll hear:
• Signs you might be an emotional hoarder
• Practical steps to address your heart
• How to recalibrate your thoughts

Sometimes couples come to a place where they realize the issue isn’t that they haven’t talked enough.

In fact, many have talked about the same things over and over again.

They have been having the same conflict, the same frustration, and the same disconnect.

At some point, it becomes clear that what’s needed isn’t another quick conversation squeezed in between busy schedules. It’s intentional space to slow down, process what’s really happening beneath the surface, and begin rebuilding in a healthier way.

Most couples don’t just need more advice. They need the time, support, and environment to actually work through their pain and their past, which have been keeping them stuck.

That's exactly what we provide at our Marriage 2.0 Intensive. We only host intensives over the weekend, so there are a limited amount of spots available. If you're interested in what this could look like for your marriage, now is the time to reach out before dates are gone for the year.
