Hay isn’t just for horses. My first Quiet Type scent, Acres was designed to be paired with the album. It’s filled with baled hay, fresh cut grass, to***co, warm fur, oak, ambergris, and a little barn air.

Shortly after I met my wife, robin, in 2019, we took a trip to Chicago, one of our favorite cities. Robin has been a longtime lover and collector of indie perfume, so naturally she brought me to Merz Apothecary, the legendary 150-year-old family-owned pharmacy and boutique on the city’s North Side that specializes in niche fragrances from around the world. It completely blew my mind.

Up until then, I assumed fragrance was mostly what you’d find at a department store - familiar florals and scents blended into something that simply smelled “nice.” There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. I just had no idea there was an entire world of wonderfully strange perfumers creating fragrances that told complex stories instead.

We spent hours at Merz and other little shops, discovering brands like Kerosene, D.S. & DURGA, Francesca Bianchi Perfumes, WEST THIRD BRAND, 𝖕𝖊𝖆𝖗𝖋𝖆𝖙 𝖕𝖆𝖗𝖋𝖚𝖒, and so many others. These weren’t just perfumes. They were memories, places, moods, and characters captured in a bottle. They made me nostalgic, curious, and for me, they completely redefined what scent could be. I was hooked.

Over the years, our personal collection has grown dramatically, and so has my fascination with perfumery. I’ve spent countless hours studying the chemistry, raw materials, aroma molecules, and craftsmanship behind building a fragrance from the ground up. Eventually, reading turned into experimenting, experimenting turned into making, and making turned into something I’m finally ready to share.

Introducing Quiet Type.

Next weekend’s record release show Uptown Theater will also serve as the soft launch of my new little perfume line. You’ll be able to smell, sample, and shop my first three fragrances in person.
