Open Doors

For many of the people we serve, a bike represents so much more than transportation. It can mean getting to work on time, making an appointment, picking up groceries, or simply having the freedom to get where they need to go.

Thanks to the generous support of the City of Norwalk, CT, our new bike rack and canopy will give clients a safe, secure, and covered place to keep their bikes, and one less thing to worry about as they move through their day.

We are incredibly grateful to the City of Norwalk for seeing the value in this project and for investing in the people we serve. Support like this creates practical change, strengthens independence, and helps build a community where people feel supported every step of the way. 💚🧡

🌟 Volunteer of the Month: Zach! 🌟

Sometimes volunteering starts for one reason and becomes meaningful for a completely different one. That’s exactly what happened with Zach.

What began as a way to complete volunteer hours quickly became something he truly enjoyed. He found purpose in helping others, being part of the community, and seeing the difference his time could make. Even after completing his hours, Zach kept coming back—and that says so much about the impact volunteering can have on the volunteer, too. 🧡💚

Thanks to our partnership with Nuvance Health and Norwalk Health Department, community members can access important health checks at no cost. Come by, check in on your health, and take one small step toward taking care of yourself.

Today, we remember and honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the first responders who showed extraordinary courage, and all those whose lives were forever changed.

We also remember how, in the face of unimaginable loss, people came together to help their neighbors, support one another, and show the strength of community.

Twenty-five years later, may we continue to carry that spirit with us—not only today, but in the way we show up for one another every day.

We will never forget.

August was another full month at The Social! 💚🧡

Participants explored new places with trips to the Yale University Art Gallery, Fairfield Museum, and Weir Farm, while also taking part in activities focused on learning and everyday skills.

Throughout the month, they learned about being a good tenant, practiced Spanish, tried new dishes in the kitchen, learned new ways to use their phones, and enjoyed plenty of other opportunities to learn, connect, and try something new.

Thank you to our incredible staff and community partners who continue to make these experiences possible for our participants: Norwalk Hospital , Liberation Programs, Inc. , and Norwalk Seaport Association.

The Social is a structured enrichment program for individuals experiencing sheltered and unsheltered homelessness, as well as former shelter guests, offering daily opportunities for learning, engagement, and community building.

Last week, Open Doors hosted Walked in Our Shoes, a tour coordinated by The Housing Collective that brought local and state leaders together for a closer look at how the homelessness response system works in Norwalk.

The visit gave us a chance to walk through our programs, talk about the different paths people may take when they experience homelessness, and share how shelter, outreach, prevention, case management, and housing support all work together.

These conversations matter. The more our leaders understand what is happening on the ground, the challenges people are facing, and what effective support looks like in practice, the better equipped we are as a community to work toward solutions.

What does charity actually look like?

Sometimes it looks like a donation. But sometimes it looks like a bag of groceries, a few hours spent volunteering, school supplies collected by a local business, help preparing for a job interview, or the keys to a new home.

This International Day of Charity, we’re thinking about all the different ways our community shows up for people when they need support.

Every meal served, every family supported, every person who moves into a home, and every opportunity to take the next step is made possible by people who decided they could help.

There is no single way to make a difference.
