⏰ A lot of couples treat the Social Security start date as only a benefits question. Claiming year also shapes how much of that check gets taxed and how it stacks with IRA withdrawals and other income in the same year. Looking at the paycheck and the tax picture together — before you lock in a start date — is something we map in a Connect conversation so you can choose with both numbers in mind, not guessing from a birthday alone.

Retire Once. Travel Often.
Fall and early winter are kinder than peak spring in Charleston, South Carolina — milder days, fewer shoulder-to-shoulder sidewalks, and oyster season in full swing.
From St. Louis it is usually a connection flight into Charleston (CHS). Downtown is walkable; pack a light jacket for harbor evenings. ⚓

🛌 Places to stay:
• The Loutrel — boutique downtown stay steps from the Battery and Rainbow Row
• The Restoration Hotel — restored historic buildings on King Street with a rooftop kitchen and easy access to shops

Things to do:
• 🚶‍➡️ Walk the Battery and Rainbow Row, then Waterfront Park
• 🛍️ Browse Charleston City Market and take a short carriage ride through the historic district if you want the classic first visit
• ⛱️ Day trip to Fort Sumter or an afternoon at Folly Beach or Isle of Palms when the weather is clear
• 🎄 If you are there mid-November, check the Holiday Festival of Lights at James Island County Park for an easy evening drive

🍽️ What/where to eat:
• Lewis Barbecue — Texas-style brisket and a lively backyard feel close to downtown
• 82 Queen — Lowcountry classics in courtyard dining
• Hall’s Chophouse — steaks and a more dressed-up night out (Gospel Brunch if you want music with breakfast)

Retirement is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a new one — and Charleston in the cooler months is an easy place to practice that.

Where would you start — harbor walk, City Market, or a long dinner downtown?

You are not alone if Medicare costs feel like a moving target 🎯 once you stop working.
Two years before you enroll, your income can shape what you pay for Part B and Part D — so a big conversion, a sale, or a withdrawal in the wrong year can raise premiums later even when the cash felt like a one-time thing.
🗺️ Mapping those years before they land is the kind of calendar we walk through at Retire Once, so the premium surprise does not show up after the fact.

Retire Once. Travel Often.
This week’s travel idea: 🗻 The White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Late September is when the high slopes start turning scarlet 🍂 and gold, a couple of weeks before the valleys fill in. From St. Louis it is usually a connection into Manchester (MHT) or Portland (PWM), then about a two-hour drive with a rental car.
Days are crisp; pack layers for the notches and cooler nights.

🛏️ Places to stay:
• Omni Mount Washington Resort (Bretton Woods) — a grand historic hotel with mountain views, a spa, and easy access to fall drives
• White Mountain Hotel & Resort (North Conway) — family-run, renovated rooms, and patio dining with a clear look at the peaks

Things to do:
• 🚗 Drive the Kancamagus Highway (the “Kanc”) between Conway and Lincoln — pull-offs, waterfalls, and the foliage corridor everyone comes for
• 🚡 Spend a morning in Franconia Notch State Park — Echo Lake, the Cannon Mountain tram for a long view, and easy walks if you want less climbing
• 🚂 Ride the Conway Scenic Railroad out of North Conway for a slower pass through the valley color
• 🚞 If the weather is clear, aim a day at the higher elevations — that is where late September color often peaks first

🍽️ What/where to eat:
• 🍷 Ledges Restaurant at the White Mountain Hotel — New England cooking with mountain views and a strong w**e list
• 🍺 Moat Mountain Smokehouse & Brewing (North Conway) — barbecue, burgers, and local b**r in a historic downtown building
• 🍔 Delaney’s Hole in the Wall (North Conway) — casual lunch or dinner with a local crowd since the mid-90s

Retirement is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a new one — and autumn in the Whites is a fine way of converting money to memories.

Where would you go first if you had a long weekend with clear weather — the Kanc drive, the train, or a quiet lodge afternoon?

💵If the quiet worry is whether the nest egg will last, one year-end move often gets missed when you already give to charity.
Once you are 70½, a Qualified Charitable Distribution from an IRA can count toward a required withdrawal without that gift adding to your taxable income. That can leave more room in the same year for the dollars you need to spend. We map QCD timing with RMD years before December 31 so the gift works with the plan.

Retire Once. Travel Often.
✈️🍇Fall in Napa Valley looks different than fall anywhere else. Mid-September is crush season — the weeks when grapes come in and the valley feels quietly busy, not tourist-loud. Cool mornings, warm afternoons, and a calendar that still has room before peak-weekend rates settle in. From St. Louis, most folks fly into Oakland or San Francisco (about a 4–5 hour hop), then drive an hour or so into w**e country. This is converting money to memories the slow way: good rooms, good meals, and a stretch of road with vineyards on both sides.

🛌 Places to stay:
• Meritage Resort & Spa (Napa) — vineyard setting with room to breathe; easy base if you want spa days between tasting appointments
• Archer Hotel Napa — walkable downtown boutique stay; rooftop and Oxbow within an easy stroll

Things to do:
• 🚗 Drive the valley floor (Napa → Yountville → St. Helena → Calistoga) and book two or three tastings ahead — harvest weeks fill up
• ☕ Oxbow Public Market — local food, coffee, and a soft landing after a morning of tasting rooms
• 🍷 Castello di Amorosa (Calistoga) — a castle w**ery that feels like a full afternoon, not a quick pour; reserve before you go
• 🍇 If a w**ery you visit is still crushing, ask about a harvest peek — watching grapes come in is the reason September trips feel special

🍽️ What/where to eat:
• 🍝 Bistro Don Giovanni — Italian classic with a Napa Valley view; lunch or dinner when you want a real sit-down meal
• 🥗 Mustards Grill (Yountville area) — longtime valley favorite; California comfort food that matches a w**e-country day
•🍔 Gott’s Roadside (Oxbow) — burgers and a casual stop when you want something simple between tastings

Retirement is not the end of the journey. It is the beginning of a new one.

One Retirement. Make It Count.
Where would your fall trip map take you first — a quiet vineyard morning or a downtown dinner walk?

The years before Social Security can be a conversion window.🪟
If you have an IRA and you have not started Social Security yet, the years in between can be a cheaper window to convert some of that IRA to Roth.

Later, required withdrawals can use up that same tax room whether you planned it or not.

That gap is often when a conversion may cost less, and it is the kind of year we map before Social Security starts.
