If your student is a senior, here is where things should stand right now:

✅ College list finalized - reach, target, and safety schools confirmed
✅ Common App account created and personal statement drafted
✅ Recommendation letters requested from two core junior-year teachers
✅ Testing plan locked in - know whether you are submitting scores and to which schools
✅ Supplemental essay research started - know what each school asks for
✅ Resume and activities list updated and ready
✅ Family FSA ID created for FAFSA (opens October 1)

If one or two of these are not done yet, this week is the week to move on them.

The students who finish strong in the fall almost always started September ahead of where they thought they needed to be.

Save this. Share it with your student.

Parents, a question for the fall:

How are you staying involved in your student's application process without taking it over?

It is one of the hardest balancing acts of this whole season. Too much and they push back. Too little and things fall through the cracks.

What is actually working in your house right now? We would love to hear it.

After working with thousands of students, here is what we consistently see in the ones who get in:

✅ A clear narrative that ties the whole application together - someone could describe them in one sentence
✅ Activities that show depth and leadership, not just a long list of memberships
✅ Essays that sound like the actual student - specific, honest, and a little unexpected
✅ A school list built around real fit, not just rankings
✅ Recommendations from people who know them well enough to say something specific
✅ A stand-out factor - one thing that makes them memorable to someone reading thousands of applications

At highly selective schools, grades and test scores are the baseline. Everyone who gets in already has them. What separates accepted students from waitlisted ones is almost always on this list.

Save this if you are starting to build your student's application strategy.

Parents, we have a genuine question for you:

What was the one thing about the college process that surprised you most - something you really did not expect going in?

We ask because the answers are almost always more useful than anything we could put in a blog post.

Drop it below. Someone reading this right now is just starting out and could really use what you know.

If your student has not asked for recommendation letters yet, this week matters.

Here is how to do it right:

✅ Ask two teachers from core junior-year subjects - these are the most relevant and most recent
✅ Ask in person first, then follow up in writing
✅ Give them a resume or short list of accomplishments from their class - it helps them write something specific
✅ Set a clear deadline that is at least 4 weeks before applications are due
✅ Follow up gently two weeks before the deadline if you have not seen confirmation
✅ Send a handwritten thank-you once the letter is submitted

Some teachers use first-come, first-served systems or have hard limits on how many letters they write per year. Waiting too long is a real risk.

Save this and share it with your student today.

ED, EA, ED2, RD. Here's what they actually mean and when each one matters:

✅ Early Decision (ED) - Binding. You commit before you apply. Typically due November 1. Strongest signal of interest and can meaningfully improve your odds at many schools.

✅ Early Action (EA) - Non-binding. You apply early and hear back early, but you're not locked in. Deadline is usually November 1 or 15.

✅ Early Decision 2 (ED2) - Also binding, but later. Typically due January 1. A second chance at an ED advantage for those with a backup choice.

✅ Regular Decision (RD) - Non-binding. Standard deadline, usually January 1. The most flexibility, but no admissions advantage.

Save this and revisit it before your student decides where to apply early.

Parents don't have the time. School counselors don't have the bandwidth. And students don't always know where to go for college support.

That's where we step in. HelloCollege is a team of 80+ experts, including former admissions officers, application readers, licensed school counselors, college professors, and university program directors. We understand this process from every angle and know how to make it more manageable for families.

That's why 98% of our 2026 students surveyed said HelloCollege made the college process less stressful.

When it comes to college admissions, having an expert in your corner makes all the difference.

Here's something families rarely hear until it is too late:

Admissions officers at competitive schools have 4 to 8 minutes to review your student's application.

That's it. Four to eight minutes for everything your student has worked toward.

This is why HelloCollege spends so much time on the details:

✅ Every activity is positioned, not just listed
✅ Every essay is refined to showcase the student's character
✅ Every part of the application is designed to make an strong and lasting impression in the time available

Your student has worked too hard for their application to undersell them.

"No matter how much research you think you can do on your own, I really don't think it would ever amount to what HelloCollege counselors have to offer."

- Jacob Z., admitted to Cornell

The stress in this process is rarely about not caring enough. It's about not having the right people in your corner.

Send this to a family who is still figuring out if they need support.

You've heard us say it before, but it's worth repeating: start early.

The college process involves a lot of moving parts: deadlines, test scores, essays, recommendations, FAFSA forms, and so on. And letting even a small detail slip through the cracks can cost you.

A missed priority deadline might cut off access to scholarship money. A forgotten FAFSA form can delay aid. And an unbalanced college list could leave you with no affordable options.

That’s exactly why we emphasize starting early: 94% of our Class of 2026 students surveyed said HelloCollege helped them avoid a costly mistake during the admissions process.

The more time you allow for exploration, preparation, and planning, the more likely you are to make the right choices.
