The pickleball serve looks simple. Toss, swing, done. And yet open play is absolutely full of serves that would make a referee develop an eye twitch. Let’s clean this up once and for all — 4 rules, 0 excuses:

1. One bounce on each side. The serve must bounce before the return, and the return must bounce before the third shot. This is the two-bounce rule and it is not a suggestion. If your serve never bounced and your partner is already at the kitchen, congratulations — you’ve invented a new sport.
2. Below the waist on contact. The ball must be struck below your waist — not your chest, not your chin, not wherever feels powerful. Waist. If your serve looks like a tennis serve, it’s not a pickleball serve, it’s a cry for help.
3. The paddle head stays below the wrist. At contact, the highest point of your paddle can’t be above your wrist joint. This is the rule everyone “forgets” the moment they want more power. The rule remembers.
4. Feet behind the line. At least one foot must be behind the baseline when you strike the ball, and neither foot can touch the court inside the line. The amount of toe-on-the-line lawyering at open play could fill a courtroom.

There. Four rules. Your serve is now legal, your conscience is clear, and you have this carousel saved for the next time someone’s serve looks suspiciously like a tennis first serve.
