SammyStrong raises awareness and funds to support those battling pediatric brain cancer. Sammy also had an angel in his corner, his nurse at his school.
Our journey began in October, when Sammy experienced severe headaches over the period of ten days. He was an advocate for himself, talking to us about his symptoms and knowing that it didn't feel normal. Who listened to him, was thoughtful, and advocated for him after he had a severe headache at school on October 19th. We listened to them both and went to the ER to have an MRI. Heartbreakingly, the doctors discovered that a cancerous tumor was causing his headaches on his brain's left side. It's news that is impossible to comprehend as Sammy is a full-spirited nine-year-old boy with everything to offer the world. The fight commenced, and we knew the journey would be challenging. We were so overwhelmed with love and support from our family, friends and community. With the support of our family and friends we were able to make our way to Memphis. The Dr.'s at St. Jude took on Sammy's case. Dr. Klimo, our pediatric neurosurgeon, was absolutely amazing throughout, answering our questions and guiding us to find the best treatment for Sammy. Surgery to remove the tumor was scheduled for November 17th. Sammy was admitted into Le Bonheur Children's Hospital in Memphis. Le Bonheur is where they do all the procedures and then kids are transferred to St. Jude for cancer treatment if needed. We were blessed to have an incredible team of doctors caring for Sammy and continuing to guide us through this scary journey. The resources at St Jude and Le Bonheur are best-in-class, and have the specialized experts who understand how to protect Sammy and fight this tumor. Dr. Klimo and his staff were able to successfully remove the entire tumor! Our time in Memphis, at Le Bonheur as well as the Fedex Family house was amazing! Everyone was extremely caring, kind, and helpful. After surgery, Sammy had a few weaknesses due to the tumors location. He began seeing speech, occupational and physical therapists while at Le Bonheur. With their help he was able to gain confidence, they gave him the tools to regain strength in his right side as well as work through his difficulties communicating. Once home, we continued those therapies at Madonna. Again we had amazing therapists and a strong support for Sammy. We got connected to the TLC program at Madonna and began working with a wonderful teacher and advocate for Sammy! She has helped tremendously with his transition back into school. Through this process we have learned incredible gratitude and also, that not everyone has a support system like ours. We know that Sammy and our family would not be where we are without this support so we want to give back to those kids/families/organizations who are fighting similar fights and need some help! Hence the beginning of the SammyStrong Nonprofit! Things are in the works and stay tuned for more information and to be apart of this healing journey!
