We are so grateful this community has organizations like Nebraska Miss Amazing that help girls feel beautiful, proud, and confident being themselves! ๐Ÿ‘‘ Miss Amazing brings together girls and women with an IEP, 504, or other documented history of a developmental disability. They get paired up with volunteer buddies to get their hair and makeup done before presenting their passions on stage. Ms. Megan supported a few of our swim, OT, PT, and speech-language kiddos at the pageant today! Itโ€™s safe to say these girls are truly AMAZING! ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป

All-Inclusive Aquatics, from the parent perspective ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿ‘‡

"Santiago is our sweetie-pie adventurer. He loves exploring, trying new things, and especially being in the water. But sometimes his adventurous spirit means he doesnโ€™t always recognize when something could be dangerous. Before joining All Inclusive Aquatics, we wore our anxiety on our faces anytime we were near the water. We constantly worried about him eloping, and there were so many family plans and outings we had to cancel because we just couldnโ€™t feel confident keeping him safe.

Then we found AIA. ๐Ÿ’™

Working with Megan and Jaimie has completely changed the way Santiago experiences the water. They have taken the time to understand Santiago as a whole child ( not just his autism ) and have helped him learn that safety can be part of the adventure. Santiago is nonverbal so Megan and Jaime both have found exciting and nurturing ways to communicate with him. Little by little, he has gained confidence, learned to swim without his life jacket, and started understanding that being safe in and around the water is the most important part of having fun.

Watching him grow has been incredible. The same little boy who once made us nervous just being near the water is now becoming more confident, more independent, and more aware of his own safety.

And the impact goes far beyond swimming. Because of the confidence Santiago has gained, our family has started making plans again. They didnโ€™t just teach him how to swim, they helped give our entire family a little bit of freedom back. ๐Ÿ’™๐ŸŒŠ"

Jadyn was an instructor with us while in the OTD program at Creighton from 2023 to 2025! After graduating she became an OT at a level 1 trauma center in Denver. In the spring she reached out to say how much she missed the pool so we connected her with an aquatic OT program! Community Aquatics n' Occupational Engagement - CANOEโ€ฆyou have an amazing new addition and we are definitely, not at all jealous!! ๐Ÿ˜‰๐Ÿคญ

Welcoming Jaydn to the CANOE team! ๐ŸŽŠ๐ŸŽ‰๐ŸŽŠ๐ŸŽ‰

The confidence! โœจ This swimmer loves many things; the water, one on one attention, and K Pop Demon Hunters. Things she doesn't love? Feeling out of control, being forced to do something, and not excelling with something right away.

Swimming was one of those things she was SO excited to learn, but it also came with endless anxiety. Over the last few months, she has created the most special bond with Ms. Allyson and we can quite literally SEE the confidence and excitement in her eyes!

There's something special about swimming with someone who takes the time to get to know you beyond an Autism diagnosis and caters their approach to you. Incorporating your motivators, talking about your goals, and respecting your boundaries. We are so thankful this swimmer has connected with Ms. Allyson and endlessly grateful for Ms. Allyson's kindness and intention during her lessons.

With her help, this swimmer recently competed in her first adaptive swim meet! She teamed up with Ms. Allyson to use floats that make her feel safe, in control, and proud of herself while racing her peers. Her confidence and independence has come so far, she did more than half the events and even did one without a float belt or flippers!

We cannot wait to see where this girl goes next! ๐Ÿ‘

September is Su***de Prevention Month. This is a hard topic. For everyone. I-Megan (Didulo)-lost my brother to su***de in 2019 and have firsthand experience helping youth with an intellectual disability navigating suicidal ideation.

It isnโ€™t easy to talk about mental health, but not talking about itโ€ฆcan create irreversible, traumatic experiences. Some not so fun facts to think about:

1. Autistic youth are 2-3x more likely to experience depression and 7-8x more likely to experience suicidal thoughts and behaviors than other youth.
2. Systematic reviews indicate that approximately 1-in-3 autistic individuals studied report suicidal ideation and between 15-25% of samples report su***de attempts or other su***de behaviors.
3. Adults with disabilities were 5 times more likely to have a major depressive episode in the past year compared to adults without disabilities (22.9% vs. 6.5%).
4. Suicidal thoughts were more than 3.3 times higher in adults with disabilities.
