Leno's Law just cleared the California Legislature 49–4. SB 1392: a smog-check exemption for true collector cars, model years 1976–1985, phased in starting January 2028. Collector insurance or under 1,000 miles a year to qualify. One signature from Governor Newsom and it's law.

Why we care: that window is the BRAT, the GL, the Leone. The cars that put Subaru on the map in America, and the ones California owners have been fighting to keep on the road for decades. A car that comes out for a show and a Sunday drive is not a commuter, and the law should finally say so.

This wasn't a Republican win or a Democrat win. Lowrider clubs, restorers, collectors, and shops like ours through SEMA pushed it across the line together. Twenty-plus years of trying. That's what it takes.

If you're in California, tell Newsom to sign it. If you're not, remember that every rule about what you can drive starts somewhere and spreads.

Build it right or don't touch it. And then be allowed to drive it.
