His Lego collection needed a room. Nobody wanted to give up a bedroom.

A new loft and a new bathroom, both built where there used to be nothing but ceiling.

Update from Lathrop. The walls are framed, the door openings are in, and the bathroom is taking shape with the shower pan on site. This week we passed rough inspections for framing, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical.

Most people never see this stage, but it’s the one that counts. Everything behind the walls gets checked and signed off before any drywall goes up.

When it’s done, the home gains 299 sq ft: a loft and a separate full bathroom, all inside the house they already had.

Same doorway. Same view. In one of them that space is a hallway railing, in the other it is a room.

This was a two story drop over the entry. All that height was really doing was making the house harder to heat. We framed a new floor, tied it into the existing structure, ran the electrical and recessed lighting, and closed the ceiling line. The family ended up with a full living space out of square footage they already owned.

Nothing pushed out the back of the house. No yard lost. Nothing changed outside.
