When recovering from a critical illness or serious injury, having the right care and support can help make the next steps possible.

Physical therapists in our critical illness recovery hospitals play a vital role in helping medically complex patients safely get moving, rebuild strength and improve endurance after a prolonged hospitalization.

Working closely with respiratory therapists and the broader clinical team, our physical therapists use early mobility and individualized therapy plans to help patients improve function and achieve greater independence.

Each step is designed to prepare patients for the next stage of their recovery journey.

There’s no single definition of recovery after a spinal cord injury.

For one person, progress might mean walking again. For another, it could mean driving, returning to work or school, getting back home or becoming more independent with everyday activities.

Spinal cord injury recovery varies widely depending on the location and severity of the injury, overall health and other factors. Specialized spinal cord injury rehabilitation can help patients build strength, improve mobility, learn new ways to complete everyday activities and use adaptive equipment and technology to increase independence.

During Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Month, learn more about spinal cord injury treatment and rehabilitation, what can affect recovery and what patients and families can expect as rehabilitation progresses.

Jan Hooks was the picture of health.

At 60, she spent her days running a farm, caring for rescue dogs and staying active from sunrise to sunset.
Then she started feeling unusually tired.

Sometimes she pulled over to take short naps before continuing her day. She chalked it up to long hours and hard work.

She was wrong.

The fatigue was a warning sign of a serious heart problem.

What happened next would change her life in an instant.

Environmental Services (EVS) team members do more than ensure cleanliness of rooms.

Their contributions protect patients from infection, offer a reassuring presence and often are one of the brightest parts of a patient’s day.

Clean environment. Compassionate care.

Across our network of critical illness recovery hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation hospitals and neuro transitional centers, our Environmental Services (EVS) teams are key to maintaining clean, healing spaces. Their work fosters safe, quality care and makes every location a welcoming place for patients, visitors and team members.

Join us in celebrating our EVS team members this week.

Support adaptive strategies. Celebrate independence.

A spinal cord injury (SCI) can disrupt many elements of an individual’s life, starting with the brain’s ability to communicate with the rest of the body. When those messages are interrupted, important functions like blood pressure, heart rate and temperature regulation can be affected. So can movement, sensation and many actions used to accomplish everyday activities.

Recovery after a spinal cord injury takes time, teamwork and personalized care. We provide that through specialized rehabilitation services that help patients rebuild strength, restore skills and learn adaptive strategies for daily-living; all of which fosters greater independence at home and in the community.

As patients progress toward their rehabilitation goals, planning a successful transition beyond the hospital becomes an important part of recovery. The care team monitors a patient’s progress, adjusts their treatment plans, helps equip them with assistive devices, if needed, and prepares them for discharge. Our care team also educates them on the next level of care such as outpatient or home health – and informs them about community resources to support their next steps.
