Miya’s legacy continues to shape the conversation around renter safety. 🦋💙
The Miya Marcano Foundation was created after the 2021 death of 19-year-old Miya Marcano and has continued advocating for stronger protections for people living in rental communities.
Miya’s Law-related protections are already in place in Florida, Virginia and Nevada, including provisions addressing employee background screening and the control of keys or electronic access to rental units.
Now, the conversation has reached Georgia. On September 24, 2026, Georgia State Representative Imani Barnes announced proposed Miya’s Law legislation and said she intends to formally introduce it during the 2027 legislative session. The announced proposal would generally require landlords to provide tenants with at least 24 hours’ notice before entering a residential rental unit, subject to the legislation’s final language and any exceptions.
The Miya Marcano Foundation is continuing its Georgia tenant-safety campaign under . Information about the Foundation’s petition is available through the QR code in this carousel.
Miya’s story remains at the heart of this work: Turning Pain into Purpose.

Your home should be your safe place.
Federal housing cases in Oklahoma are a powerful reminder of what can happen when access to someone's home exists without sufficient accountability.
In January 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice filed a Fair Housing Act lawsuit against Oklahoma landlord Shevis “Don” Petties, alleging sexual harassment of female tenants. Among the allegations were entering tenants' bedrooms without consent, photographing or filming women without their knowledge or permission, physical assault and threats involving their housing. These remain allegations in a civil case.
And this is not the only Oklahoma case raising these concerns. In a separate case, the Justice Department obtained a $1.25 million settlement in 2021 resolving claims involving sexual harassment of female tenants and prospective tenants. The DOJ said the alleged conduct included entering women's homes unannounced and without consent.
These cases reinforce why renter safety cannot stop at the front door. Who has access, how that access is controlled, and how people are held accountable matter.
The Miya Marcano Foundation continues advocating for stronger protections and safer housing practices so renters can feel secure in the place they call home.

A recent apartment management case is another reminder that renter safety depends on more than locked doors. When oversight breaks down, tenants can be exposed to unnecessary risks. That's why the Miya Marcano Foundation continues to advocate for stronger housing protections through Miya's Law.
Miya's Law addresses critical safety gaps by promoting background checks for employees with access, key control procedures, and greater accountability in residential properties. While no single law can prevent every incident, stronger policies can help reduce preventable risks and create safer communities for renters everywhere. Every renter deserves transparency, accountability, and peace of mind.

Your home should be the one place where you never have to question your safety. Every renter deserves to know that their privacy will be respected and their space protected. No one should enter your home without clear permission, proper notice, and a legitimate reason. These aren't special requests, they're fundamental expectations. Strong housing policies help protect those boundaries through transparency, accountability, and responsible access procedures. That's why the Miya Marcano Foundation continues to advocate for stronger renter protections through Miya's Law. Because everyone deserves to feel safe behind their own front door.

Miya had dreams that reached far beyond what the world came to know.
She was working toward a future filled with purpose—studying health and sports medicine while embracing every opportunity to learn, create, travel, and grow. She was a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a young woman excited about what the future held.
Today, on we remember not only the life that was taken, but the dreams that deserved the chance to flourish. Her legacy lives on through the work of the Miya Marcano Foundation as we advocate for safer housing, stronger protections for renters, and a future where no family's dreams are cut short by preventable tragedy. Because every dream deserves the opportunity to grow in a safe space.
