Five years ago today, during the withdrawal of Afghanistan, everything changed in the blink of an eye as Abbey Gate was attacked. 13 American service members were killed, 45 were wounded in action – many severely. For Bryan Stern and a small team of veterans operating in and around Afghanistan - before Grey Bull Rescue even had a name - the mission changed forever.
Today, to honor the fallen and keep their memory alive, Bryan Stern reads the names of the 13 American service members who paid the ultimate sacrifice at Abbey Gate: https://youtu.be/iIi-v5r2EgQ?si=XqKeuvbJJK53T5Xr
Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, sons, daughters, teammates, and an entire generation of veterans who served in Afghanistan would carry August 26 with them from that day forward.
For the group of patriots who would eventually become Grey Bull Rescue, Abbey Gate wasn't something we watched on TV from thousands of miles away. We were boots-on-ground, assuming risk, actively conducting missions to evacuate Americans and allies as the Taliban took control.
The loss hit differently because we were vets on the ground -- confronting the same threats, on the streets, on the borders, trying to do the same thing as those who made the ultimate sacrifice: save lives.
As combat veterans, we understood the risks. Abbey Gate was a brutal reminder of something only those who have stood the watch know intimately: there is a difference between watching a war from the comfort of the rear and standing inside a conflict in your own boots.
On August 26, 2021, thirteen Americans paid that cost with their lives. Forty-five others were wounded but survived, carrying the brutal wounds of war and the loss of their teammates to this day.
Five years later, those brave American servicemen and women remain part of the history that shaped who we are, why we do what we do, and the standard we carry forward around the world. We chose to live our ethos: DON’T BE A SPECTATOR and always deploy forward to save lives.
Not simply as names in the history of the Afghanistan withdrawal, but as Americans who stood the wall, in the field, trying to get Americans and allies to safety.
To the wounded who survived, the teammates who were there, and especially the Gold Star families who have carried this loss for the last five years: we remember them with you. We love you. We pray for you.
And to the 13 fallen: We say your names. We remember your service. We remember your sacrifice.
Five years later…as we say… Never forget and always remember.
Rest in peace, brothers and sisters. We have the wall. 🇺🇸

Five years ago this week, as Afghanistan collapsed, Bryan Stern got a call from an Afghan interpreter he worked with who was being hunted by the Taliban. Days later, Bryan and a small team were on the ground, getting Americans and allies out.
That decision would lead to hundreds rescued from Afghanistan, the first post-withdrawal charter operation into and out of Taliban-controlled Kabul, and ultimately, Grey Bull Rescue and the 811 missions that followed.
In Bryan’s words:
“Five years ago this week, Afghanistan was collapsing.
I was preparing remarks for the 20th anniversary of 9/11, reflecting on four days spent searching for survivors at Ground Zero. As a 9/11 first responder and Afghanistan combat veteran, watching people fall from departing aircraft in Kabul hit me hard: people were in trouble, and I needed to do something.
Then my interpreter called. He needed help.
For twenty years, U.S. Special Operations Forces and the Intelligence Community fought alongside Afghans who shared intelligence, opened their communities to us, and fought beside us to bring justice to 9/11.
I knew these people. I worked with them. Ate with them. Looked them in the eyes.
When that phone rang, someone I had given my word to was asking for help.
I made the decision to go.
There was no Grey Bull Rescue. Just a handful of veterans, Intelligence Community professionals, and patriots—including Matt Herring of Ultra Defense Corp—and others still quietly serving with us today.
So we flew. We physically deployed into the region and PUT OURSELVES into the problem. Boots on the ground.
We operated through Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Afghanistan, building intelligence, relationships, logistics, routes, and options as the security environment changed by the hour.
Then the last U.S. troops withdrew, with Major General Chris Donahue the last American service member to leave Afghanistan. Kabul Airport closed, the Embassy evacuated, the Taliban took control, and Americans were left behind.
But we kept going. We put a large aircraft into Taliban-controlled Kabul and rescued 117 American citizens — including 59 children – from the clutches of the Taliban.
Hundreds more Americans and allies followed by land and air.
A few people getting on a plane became something none of us predicted... 811 missions later. Afghanistan. Ukraine. Russia. Sudan. Israel. Gaza. Lebanon. Haiti. Hurricanes. Wildfires. Hostages. Denied environments.
Afghanistan gave us a standard: When the conventional option fails, find another one. When everyone else is watching: DON’T BE A SPECTATOR. GO.
There is a straight line from September 11, 2001, to that phone call in August 2021, to Grey Bull Rescue today: WE DON’T LEAVE OUR PEOPLE BEHIND.
Five years later, it’s still why we get on a plane. Every time.”
