Happy Trails for Kids’ camp gives hundreds of foster youth a place to explore, connect, and belong year after year. On a new 133-acre site in Acton, transferred by the County, they’ll be able to multiply that mission with new athletic fields, hiking trails, gathering spaces, cabins, and spaces designed intentionally for community building. I was proud to gather with their supporters and funders this week to dream about what’s next and garner the support needed to open the new campus in 2027 for these deserving youth.

Are you Earthquake Ready ?

We don't know when the next big earthquake will happen, but our residents should feel empowered and equipped to be ready when it does. At this week's Board of Supervisors meeting, we were joined by renowned seismologist Dr. Lucy Jones, alongside our County department leaders, to outline our current preparedness and to strategize how to strengthen our efforts. With their findings in mind, I introduced a motion that will expand emergency response training, implement an annual full-scale exercise to test our County's response, and better reduce our risks through work by our Sheriff's Department, Fire Department, and Office of Emergency Management.

I remain committed to ensuring our residents are ready for when the next earthquake occurs. Check out these helpful tips to make sure you’re prepared.

Drop, Cover, Hold On: Encourage your family, friends, and coworkers to practice drills at home and at work for what to do when the shaking starts.

Make Your Plan: Create both a family and a workplace emergency plan that includes how others will contact or reconnect with you if you’re separated.

Strategize Your Exit: Remind your family, friends, and coworkers to be prepared by knowing the best evacuation routes.

Ready Your Home: Secure televisions, monitors, bookcases, and items that hang on walls and be sure to store heavy and breakable items on low shelves. Additionally, inspect the inside and outside of your home for items that could fall and get damaged or cause an injury and secure them with braces, bolts, or straps. If you own your home, consider getting an earthquake insurance policy because standard homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover earthquake damage.

Do Your Part: Enroll in First Aid, CPR, and Community Emergency Response Team trainings in your community to lend a helping hand.

Prepare Supplies: Make a disaster supply kit that includes enough food, water, and medication to last for at least 10 days. Check out this video from L.A. County that shows how to make a starter kit for less than $25 at the dollar store.

Sign up for Alerts: Register here for emergency alerts to get timely information to your phone.

Together, we can all be more prepared. Access helpful earthquake readiness resources at https://ready.lacounty.gov/earthquakes/ today.

Palmdale to Break Ground on Chimbole Center Renovation

Modernized gathering spaces will bring fresh life to two longtime community landmarks

A place where generations of Palmdale residents have celebrated milestones, attended meetings and connected with neighbors is taking a step toward reopening. The City of Palmdale will celebrate the start of its transformation with a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, October 9 at 10 a.m. at the Chimbole Center, 38350 Sierra Highway.

Members of the Palmdale City Council and Congressman George Whitesides will lead the ceremony for Phase 1 of the project. Whitesides helped secure a $2 million federal earmark to support the work.

“The Chimbole Center holds special memories for so many people in Palmdale, and its absence has been deeply felt,” said Mayor Eric Ohlsen. “Our community has truly missed having this place to celebrate, gather and connect. This groundbreaking brings us closer to opening its doors again and welcoming residents back to create new memories.”

A striking two-level glass concourse will become a centerpiece of the renovated Center, connecting it with a new main entrance to the Palmdale City Library. The project will restore the Center following fire and water damage in Dec. 2022, updating the spaces and systems that make community celebrations, meetings and activities possible.

Improvements include interior and exterior renovations of the building; a new roof system; replacement of the heating, cooling, electrical and plumbing systems; upgraded fire alarm and security systems; and accessibility, parking and lighting improvements. Inside, warming kitchen equipment, movable room partitions in the main ballroom and audiovisual systems will support a variety of gatherings.

“This investment will make the Center more accessible and adaptable to the many ways our residents use it,” said Mayor Pro Tem Austin Bishop. “Its new connection to the Library brings together two places where people learn, gather and build community. We appreciate Congressman Whitesides’ work to secure federal funding to help make these improvements possible.”

The project builds on decades of shared history. Established in 1987, the Chimbole Center honors Larry Chimbole, Palmdale’s first mayor, who helped lead the City’s incorporation in 1962. It has hosted family milestones, fundraisers and community meetings. Next door, the Library opened in 1977 as the City’s first municipal building and has connected generations of residents with books, educational resources and programs.

The City Council awarded the construction contract to Icon West, Inc., for approximately $26.7 million, with a 15% contingency, bringing the authorized construction amount to approximately $30.7 million. Funding comes from the General Fund, Measure AV, the American Rescue Plan Act and federal earmarks.

Construction is expected to take 360 working days from the City’s Notice to Proceed.

For more information about the project, please visit https://www.cityofpalmdaleca.gov/157/Current-Capital-Improvement-Projects or call Palmdale’s Public Works department at 661-267-5300.
