I enjoyed meeting today in my Statehouse office with Kent Johnson, CEO of Highlights for Children, the iconic company founded in 1946 by his great-grandparents, Dr. Garry Cleveland Myers and Caroline Clark Myers.

Like so many children, I grew up reading Highlights magazine, so this meeting was particularly special for me. As a former teacher, it was especially meaningful to talk about the shared responsibility of schools, families, and the broader community to help every child discover and develop their God-given talents.

We also discussed the importance of bringing cursive writing back into our schools. Beyond helping students read historical documents and primary sources, research shows that handwriting supports brain development, memory, and learning.

Thank you, Kent, for a thoughtful conversation about how we can better support Ohio’s young scholars and help them reach their full potential.
