WE DID IT. SB 1090 HAS BEEN SIGNED!

Today, David beat Goliath.

At about 3:15 this afternoon — on the last day for the governor to sign or veto bills — some of us were starting to get very nervous.

SB 1090 had been left out of the governor’s wildfire bill signing in Altadena a few weeks ago and out of another batch of housing bills signed yesterday.

And Senator Sasha Renée Pérez, the bill’s author, had publicly stood up against parts of the governor’s wildfire reform package. After other Pérez bills were vetoed, some of us were worried that SB 1090 could get caught in that political crossfire too.

It didn’t.

Governor Newsom signed SB 1090.

This one took months of work. Countless phone calls and emails, strategy, amendments, and a whole lot of in person lobbying in Sacramento by fire survivors — myself included — to move votes and get this across the finish line. The amended bill ultimately passed both the Assembly and Senate without a single no vote.

There will be plenty of people rushing to take credit but those of us who worked closely on this know what it took, who was in the rooms, who made the calls, who knocked on the doors, and how we got here.

Tonight I’m raising a glass to everyone who did that work and every single person in the community who spoke up for themselves and all of us.

And, for once, I’m raising one to me too.

We worked damn hard for this. And today, it paid off. Let's celebrate before we need to put our heads down and rally for the next fight 🥂
