This is bad news for public health and safety.
Edwin Lyman, director of nuclear power safety at the Union of Concerned Scientists, warned that the change could ultimately make it so that currently low doses of radiation that workers and the public are exposed to “could increase really all the way up to regulatory limits without any sanction from the NRC.”
He said this could include by having employees work longer shifts and therefore getting more radiation exposure.
Overall, he said, “this is opening the door for sloppier practices” and “worse management.”
US moves to eliminate longtime radiation safety principle for nuclear power The federal government is proposing to overhaul radiation safety regulations for nuclear power, including by eliminating a long-term principle for nuclear safety. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission …

If you can’t attend in person, please register for TODAY’S presentation on nuclear plants in New York and what’s happening at Indian Point:
Communities Against Nuclear: No Nuclear at Indian Point! - NY Renews Nuclear energy is too toxic, too dangerous, too expensive, and too slow to build to be a real solution to the climate or affordability crisis facing New York families. It's great the Food & Water Watch is presenting events around NY State tomorrow (June 30th) regarding the misguided push for new nuclear plants and subsidies for existing ones. Very few people are aware of the risks and health effects of this MOST expensive way to produce electricity.
For anyone in the lower Hudson region, there will be a hybrid event at the Hendrick Hudson library, 185 Kings Ferry Road in Montrose, at 3:30 TOMORROW focusing on Indian Point.
Hope a lot of people can be there in person!

Nuclear is not the solution to the climate crisis. In France they are shutting down reactors during an extreme heatwave because they cannot be cooled.
The Legislature must pass the NYS Ratepayer Protection Nuclear Moratorium Act (S9962/A11433), which would pause new nuclear power projects in New York for 2.5 years to assess the costs and impacts. We should not let Governor Kathy Hochul waste our hard earned money on a false solution.
See the comments for an LTE by SEnRG cofounder Courtney Williams in support of the NYS Ratepayer Protection Nuclear Moratorium Act (S9962/A11433) published by the Peekskill Herald.
