What areas of yourself has entrepreneurship revealed to you?
When people talk about the benefits of growing up in a family business, they usually mean learning how to work hard.
What they don’t talk about is what you don’t learn.
I grew up in a very successful Black-owned family business surrounded by Black women. No one taught me how to code-switch because I never had to. Hard work, competence, and results spoke for themselves.
Then I graduated, entered corporate America, and realized something I couldn’t quite name.
It wasn’t enough to be good at my job. People expected a performance from me before they would recognize my competence. I kept asking myself, What is different about me? Why can’t they see what I bring to the table?
Eventually I realized it wasn’t my ability they were questioning. It was my presentation.
Entrepreneurship gives me the freedom to succeed without performing.

Apple Butter Cinnamon Rolls.
What started as a seasonal special quickly became a Sunday tradition.
Every Thursday night, pre-orders closed. From that point on, there was no changing the count. We knew exactly how many we had to make, and the weekend production began.
On Friday, our pastry chef would spend part of the day preparing every ingredient for the brioche dough, measuring flour, sugar, yeast, Plugra butter, eggs, spices so that Saturday morning we could start mixing first thing. The dough was rich, buttery, and soft, which meant it needed time. After mixing, it rested in the fridge before being rolled into large sheets, covered generously with a brown sugar-honey schmear, then tightly rolled, sliced, and nestled into pans.
Instead of rushing the process, we let the rolls proof overnight. While Peekskill slept, the dough slowly rose, developing flavor and becoming impossibly light.
On Sunday mornings, about 40 minutes before opening the doors, the bakery filled with the smell of butter, cinnamon, yeast, and brown sugar. If you walked by before we unlocked the doors, you could smell them from outside.
The moment they came out of the oven, each roll was finished with a warm glaze that landed somewhere between an apple caramel sauce and cream cheese frosting. Sweet, tangy, buttery, and just a little savory from the inclusion of herbs like rosemary and thyme. It melted into every crevice while the rolls were still hot.
Each cinnamon roll was about four inches across, two inches tall, and weighed enough to be a meal on its own.
At $9.25, they weren’t an impulse purchase for everyone, but people planned their Sundays around them. We’d regularly have customers arrive before opening, and it was rare that we didn’t sell out of the few extras we made before the afternoon.
