What does a better future look like?

This week, our Discover campers explored social justice by taking their ideas to the pavement. Through chalk art, they shared messages about learning from the past, embracing the present, and dreaming of a brighter future.

At NECS, we believe every voice matters. When young people are encouraged to express their hopes and ideas, they begin to see that they have the power to shape the world around them.

Service was the theme, and our campers embraced it wholeheartedly. This week, they rolled up their sleeves to help prepare meals for seniors, learning that community is strengthened when we care for one another. We are proud of these young leaders for putting compassion into action.

Our Nature Connection campers recently stepped back in time to explore Peekskill’s connection to the Underground Railroad.

During their tour, campers learned how brave individuals and local communities helped freedom seekers on their journey north, and discovered how Peekskill played a small but important role in this chapter of American history.

🌿 Meet our Nature Connection Campers!

✨ Explorers (Grades K–2) shine bright as they discover the wonders of nature through play, creativity, and hands-on adventures.

🔍 Discoverers (Grades 3–5) are curious learners who ask questions, build new skills, and uncover the world around them.

🌲 Pathfinders (Grades 6–8) take the lead in exploring the natural world through adventure, teamwork, and discovery.

No matter their age, every camper is building confidence, making new friends, and creating lasting connections.🌞

On Friday, our Discoverers (Grades 3–5) explored the art of woodworking through the Slöyd Youth Woodworking Program, led by instructor Ted Haber and local sculptor and woodworker Kurt Steger.

Using traditional hand tools, students learned more than woodworking skills, they practiced patience, focus, problem-solving, and perseverance. Rooted in the Scandinavian Slöyd philosophy, the program helps build confidence, resilience, and character through hands-on learning.

We’re grateful to be part of a community that values experiential education and provides opportunities like this for local youth.

This week at NECS, our Explorers focused on one of our core values: Nobility. ✨

To help bring this value to life, Dara, director of Explorers, shared a piece of Yoruba culture by wearing traditional Yoruba headwear. These garments are often worn during celebrations and special occasions and represent heritage, identity, and community.

Through experiences like these, our Explorers learn about different cultures, celebrate diversity, and gain a deeper appreciation for the world around them.
