“Supporting local farms and producers this season may be more important than ever,” says Bridget Palombo, director of healthy food access for The Food Trust (TFT). “TFT is working with farmers to help shoppers understand that the peaches on the table, for example, may have traveled hundreds or even thousands of miles because our local orchards were hit so hard.”

A freakish springtime freeze leaves regional farmers reeling after killing scores of crops - Grid Magazine The 2026 freeze was uncommonly thorough. It affected trees throughout orchards, and it hit orchards across a wide geographic area. Greg Stamm has worked in agriculture almost his entire career and has “never seen anything like this.”

ICYMI: Healthy food access doesn’t look the same everywhere, and meeting people where they are is at the heart of The Food Trust’s work. This spring, we were proud to partner with the Philadelphia Dept. of Prisons, Philadelphia Division of Reentry and Bennett Compost through the Orchard Compost Program, a 15-week program designed to help incarcerated persons build skills that support successful reentry into the community: https://bit.ly/4wFBFCc.

Join us Thursday August 6 to learn about prison and re-entry food programs, and help pick vegetables and fruit from Philadelphia’s prison orchard on State Road.

Since 1993, our nutrition educators have worked in local public schools to help students build lifelong food skills through hands-on cooking lessons, school garden building, farm field trips, and conversations about where food comes from. Along the way, we’ve had the privilege of building meaningful relationships with students, teachers, school staff, and community partners across the region.

As SNAP-Ed comes to an end in Pennsylvania, we’re filled with gratitude for everyone who made this work possible. Thank you for welcoming us into your classrooms, schools and communities. It has been an honor to learn and grow alongside you (special shout-out to the students who wrote goodbye cards to our wonderful nutrition educators, whose work will be pivoting to new projects this fall).

While this chapter is ending, The Food Trust’s commitment to nutrition education is not. We will continue helping people build the knowledge, skills and confidence to make healthy choices through in-person and virtual learning, curriculum development, professional training, partner convenings, and other innovative approaches.
