Urgent care takes on a different meaning when you’re undergoing cancer treatment.

At Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Memorial Hospital, patients experiencing acute medical issues related to cancer or its treatment need immediate care from clinicians who already understand the complexities of their diagnosis and care plan.

To meet growing demand, EwingCole designed a 10,500-square-foot expansion of the hospital’s Urgent Care Center, adding 25 private treatment rooms and the clinical support spaces needed to expand capacity while maintaining a calm, patient-centered environment.

Warm materials, integrated artwork, thoughtful lighting, and an efficient clinical layout balance the demands of high-acuity care with privacy, comfort, and reassurance during an especially vulnerable moment in a patient’s care journey.

What if the landscape surrounding a school became part of the classroom?

Set against a wooded rise in Concord, Massachusetts, the new Ellen Garrison Building at Concord Middle School brings learning closer to nature. Outdoor classrooms, walking paths, stormwater gardens, abundant daylight, and views into the surrounding tree canopy give students opportunities to engage with their environment throughout the school day.

Inside, the school’s “Treetop Teams” organize students into grade-based learning communities centered around shared commons, supporting collaboration, interdisciplinary learning, and a stronger sense of connection.

Designed in partnership with SMMA, the 143,000-square-foot school also puts those environmental lessons into practice. The all-electric, Net Zero Ready facility combines a high-performance envelope, rooftop photovoltaics, energy recovery, and low-embodied-carbon materials to reduce its impact while supporting a healthy learning environment.

A new era has kicked off for the Army West Point Athletics Black Knights’ Michie Stadium.

EwingCole has completed the $170 million transformation of the East Stands at the U.S. Military Academy, West Point, bringing a contemporary sports and hospitality experience to one of college football’s most distinctive settings.

The new East Stands introduce approximately 6,000 seats, including a prominent new home for the Corps of Cadets, along with new premium seating, hospitality spaces, concessions, retail, and the Lessey Army Sports Hall of Fame.

But Michie Stadium could only exist at West Point. The design draws from the Academy’s architectural character while opening toward both Blaik Field and Lusk Reservoir, connecting the game-day experience to the remarkable landscape surrounding it.

After years of planning, design, engineering, and construction, the transformed East Stands welcomed Army fans and cadets for the first time this weekend.

What does a building designed for discovery look like?

At the University of Pennsylvania, the Physical Sciences Building is designed to bring disciplines, people, and ideas together. The 325,000-square-foot complex will create a new home for Physics and Astronomy, Mathematics, and Earth and Environmental Science, combining advanced research and teaching environments with spaces that encourage collaboration across traditional academic boundaries.

Flexible laboratories are adaptable spaces that are equipped to meet future scientific research needs, while classrooms, maker spaces, a science library, and a 120-seat colloquium auditorium support learning at every scale.

At its heart, a large first-floor commons will serve as an academic town square. Nearby, a two-story lobby provides ample daylight and visually connects the building’s interior to the surrounding landscape.

Designed by CO Architects, the Physical Sciences Building creates a flexible new nexus for the next generation of scientific discovery at Penn.

At Deborah Heart and Lung Center Heart & Lung Center, the surrounding New Jersey Pinelands helped shape an interior environment rooted in nature, comfort, and care.

Inside the Olsen Family Patient Care Pavilion, EwingCole’s interior design team drew inspiration from the colors and forms of the local landscape. A palette of blues and oranges recalls blueberry fields at sunrise while helping patients and visitors navigate the building. Expansive windows connect 36 private inpatient suites to views of the wooded campus, and organic forms carry through spaces like the sculptural greeter nurse station.

That connection to nature begins at the entrance with a living green wall and extends even to spaces designed specifically for staff. A bright, tropical staff lounge offers caregivers a place to recharge away from the clinical environment.
Together, these elements create a healthcare setting that considers how patients, families, and staff experience the space throughout their day.

What if one of the most highly controlled building types could also become one of the most sustainable?

United Therapeutics Corporation’s Warp 10 is putting that idea to the test. Now nearing completion, the first-of-its-kind cGMP manufacturing facility uses mass timber at a scale and in an environment where few have gone before.

The 196,000-square-foot facility in Research Triangle Park brings pharmaceutical manufacturing, laboratories, warehousing, and workplace functions under one roof. Using mass timber in a highly controlled manufacturing environment is highly unconventional, but not impractical.

The solution combines green steel and concrete with mass timber to create a hybrid structural system that dramatically reduces embodied carbon.

The approach extends to the building’s operations. More than 3,000 rooftop solar panels, combined with an adjacent solar field, are expected to offset approximately half of Warp 10’s annual energy consumption.

The result pushes mass timber into new territory and challenges long-held assumptions about what a large-scale biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility can be.
