We’re hiring! Join PCW’s close-knit team as our Development and Communications Manager! In this role, you will lead PCW’s development strategies, manage organizational communications and marketing, and support community engagement with our incredible community stakeholders.

Full-time, hybrid (75% on site, 25% remote), North Philly-based.

At every install, workshop, and volunteer session, we at PCW are constantly engaging with the “why”: Why do we pursue our work building free internet access in Philadelphia?

Since 2020, our team and staff have made it our mission to envision a future where everyone can access the internet, regardless of income, housing, or identity. Our community deserves a baseline of internet access for work, school, and personal use, and we aim to establish that for Philadelphians. We don’t seek to solely provide internet in every single house we can, but to spread our internet connection across public areas of the neighborhood for everyone to use safely and efficiently.

With the help of PhillyWisper, our staff and volunteers installed an access point and directional panel to achieve this goal by broadcasting coverage to residents in the Somerset Area of North Philadelphia. Big thanks to for hosting our equipment to provide internet to their neighbors! 🛜

Come out for a walking tour of Philly’s ONLY community internet network on August 29 from 1-3pm! The tour will give you the inside scoop on how community internet works, who makes it happen, and where PCW is today 👀

We’ll start off by touring PCW’s headquarters, checking out the equipment and tools needed to build our Wi-Fi network. During a 75-minute walk around the historically rich neighborhood of Norris Square, we’ll walk by 9 PCW Wi-Fi sites and a “high site” where the network’s internet connection comes from.

We’ll visit two of Norris Square Neighborhood Project’s ironic community gardens where our public Wi-Fi supports garden programming and an AR/VR art installation, Termite TV Collective’s “Places of Power.” Plus we’ll have snacks, drinks, and be selling our merch at a discounted rate! 🥤🧢

Since the emergence of Philly Community Wireless six years ago, Alex Wermer-Colan – our co-founder, former volunteer Admin Lead, and, since 2023, Executive Director – has led our work building community-controlled networks in North Philadelphia, expanding internet access to those who need it most.

Alex’s leadership, dedication, and constant innovation has turned PCW from a small, volunteer-led pilot project, to a burgeoning organization that serves tens of thousands of Philadelphians. On top of being the Academic and Research Director of Temple University Libraries’ Loretta C. Duckworth Scholars Studio at Temple University, Alex devotes countless hours to PCW network installations, training staff and volunteers, and forging crucial community partnerships across the city.

PhillyWisper, a local, independent Internet Service Provider, provides the backhaul infrastructure for PCW’s network through fixed wireless technology. Since the beginning of Philly Community Wireless, the staff at PhillyWisper has offered tremendous tech support and knowledge, helping our team to design the network, configure the equipment, and install at different properties, as pictured in our recent install in Fairhill!
