What a wonderful investment in students at Aspen Heights MicroSociety in Red Deer, Alberta! 🇨🇦

Kathy and Peter Lacey have donated $30,000 directly to the school’s MicroSociety in memory of Kathy’s father, longtime Red Deer entrepreneur Jack Donald.

“My parents always taught me that it was important to work hard and to always give something back. MicroSociety seemed like the perfect way to honour my dad,” Kathy told students at their recent swearing-in assembly.

We love seeing a community recognize the value of giving young people opportunities to learn about business, take on real responsibilities, and discover how they can contribute to the world around them.

They’re getting opportunities to explore what those ideas mean through hands-on experiences.

Financial literacy gets a lot more interesting when students have a reason to pay attention.

Running a MicroSociety business gives students a reason to think about revenue, expenses, pricing, customers, and whether their business is actually succeeding.

A new MicroSociety chapter is taking shape in Staten Island!

On Tuesday and Wednesday, we kicked off training with educators from six new afterschool sites operated by New York Center for Interpersonal Development NYCID.

Together, educators explored how MicroSociety can bring hands-on leadership, entrepreneurship, civic engagement, and real-world learning into afterschool spaces, giving students opportunities to learn by doing and discover what they’re capable of.

We’re excited to welcome these new educators and sites into the MicroSociety network and can’t wait to see what their students build, lead, and create!

Participants explored “Why Micro, Why Now?” by looking at generational timelines, the skills Generation Alpha will need, and the importance of creating authentic MicroSociety experiences in the classroom.

During a SWOT activity, teams reflected on the changes from last year to this year, celebrated the growth they’ve seen, and identified new opportunities for continued improvement.

From there, they worked on connecting MicroSociety organization objectives to campus goals and student needs while designing departments and roles that support meaningful student work.

We loved seeing the collaboration, reflection, and planning happening throughout the training!

Using the summer to build leaders, strengthen communities, and plan for the future.
Our recent coaching visit to St. Philip's Kids' Academy summer camp was an opportunity to celebrate progress, reflect on successes, and work alongside students and staff to strengthen their MicroSociety.
Over two days, we observed the student-led government, reflected on program growth, and heard directly from students about what MicroSociety means to them.

One student said it best:
"It's like a preview of what your future might be. It gives me a better chance of being what I want to be when I grow."

Together, we identified new opportunities, celebrated accomplishments, and developed a shared vision for stronger MicroSociety experience.
