The Saturday Surplus Give Away at St. Thomas’ monthly barn sale was a success. It was a lot of work but came with many rewards. It was a hot and very humid day and our volunteers got up very early to set up before 8 a.m. when the doors opened, They are a passionate group of cat educators and advocates who were kept busy all morning, answering questions and sharing information. Our contacts at St. Thomas’ noted BCR volunteers are an impressive group and they invited us back.

Thanks to Katie Beyer, Michael Beyer, Adrienne Dicters, Nancy Kustin, Janie Shields, and Petra Termini. Michael saved us by being the only one who knew how to erect the “lifesaving” tent! And after the event, Nancy Kustin hauled whatever remained to a thrift store benefitting an animal rescue. Janie Shields had packed her car with items from my house before the sale, and we offered three car loads of cat giveaways. We also sold the wonderful fleece blankets that so many of our cats enjoy and which are made by Cathy O’Connell.

Happy tails for Gretel and Merlin! They found their forever home🐾♥

Brenda’s Cat Rescue (BCR) has cat items to share and will host a table at the "Second Saturday Sale" on August 8th from 8 a.m. – Noon at St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church Whitemarsh in Fort Washington.

Because the economy is so tight and Brenda’s house is full of donated items that cat parents may need, BCR will give away its surplus supplies. Items will be free to visitors, (no food and medications available). Some items are gently used; others are new. Available items include litter boxes, scoops, scratching posts, grooming aids, food bowls, blankets and textiles, toys, crates, storage containers, automatic feeders, and water dispensers, as well as miscellaneous supplies. New hand-made fleece lap blankets will be sold. The Barn Sale is well known and packed with whatever it is that you are looking for.

St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, like all Episcopal dioceses in Philadelphia, includes animals among its target groups for ministry support. Its 42 acre campus off Bethlehem Pike, invites all to visit its arboretum grounds for relaxation, stress relief, bird watching (there are many blue bird houses), bee keeping, community gardening, a pet cemetary and even an Animal Cabin, with a sensory garden, for shelter dogs to come for a day out of their cage. Whether we will have cats at this event depends on the temperature and the weather forecast. The Sale will be held rain or shine so we hope to see you at St. Thomas’ Barn Sale on Saturday, August 8th.

EDIT: Opie's home from his short hospital stay and looks great (though not out of the woods yet)! He will continue to be on an antibiotic and pain medications for another week. We're hopeful this sweet boy will get healthier each day.

Opie’s eyes are healing well since surgery, but he’s hit a bit of a bump in the road with his mouth. He developed a severe mouth infection that we were hoping would respond to an antibiotic injection (which would prevent us from having to pill him for 10 days), but the infection did not respond. The oral cavity is closely connected, so Opie went back into the hospital over the weekend and a stronger antibiotic begun. His mouth is swollen and still painful but he is on a strong dose of pain meds and he continues to eat well. We hope he thinks that sleeping on soft surfaces, in air conditioning and with regular meals delivered, is not bad living compared to his previous life outdoors where he was in constant pain and had food struggles. Opie continues to be very loving and seems to know that all the hands around him are full of love and caring. We hope that he will be available for adoption soon. He is a special cat that will be a loving and loyal companion.
