Better waste systems create better resident experiences:
When an apartment or condo building starts composting with us, they do more than divert food scraps from a landfill. Dedicated spaces for wet food waste keeps units cleaner, AND (by extension) your trash room cleaner. Issues like a putrid trash shoots and leaking trash bags disappear in the first months after you make the switch, freeing up your management team to focus on the forward-facing details your residents value most.
Moreover, when a building's waste areas are clean and organized, residents notice - especially when it comes to putrid smells. It signals care, strengthens confidence in management, and supports the kind of experience people expect from a well-run community, especially in luxury, Class A, and newly renovated properties.
If you manage a multifamily property, let’s build a waste program residents will actually appreciate together.
If you live in an apartment building with a trash room that smells, leaks, overflows, or just feels neglected, DM your property manager this post, and tell them: it's time to start composting!

Houseplants don't have to be an expensive hobby! Here's how to get started for next to nothing:
🎉 Get together with friends for a propagation swap party
👋 Make a request on your local Buy Nothing or neighborhood group
🪴 Use upcycled containers, like cute fancy tea tins (don't forget to make a drainage hole in the bottom!)
Quality soil can make all the difference, especially for houseplants. But when you are potting up a few cuttings or refreshing one or two indoor plants, you may not need a full-size bag.
That's why we now offer both our Gritty Mix and Potting Soil in convenient 2-quart bags, perfectly portioned for smaller indoor projects. Grab one of each for $16.60 plus tax, and get free delivery anywhere in Philadelphia! Link in bio ➡️ Bennett Compost | https://bennettcompost.stopsuite.com/shop/bennett-compost-shop/

Our chickens at PDP are counting the minutes to November 1st 🐓🎃 We keep pumpkins out of landfills after , and recycle them into compost!
When pumpkins (and other food waste) are sent to landfills, they break down without oxygen, releasing methane - a powerful greenhouse gas responsible for near term warming (aka these scorching hot summers).
If the same pumpkins are composted, they don’t release methane - AND you get a useful resource: !
Over a billion pounds of pumpkins are trashed each year after Halloween, and while we can’t compost all of them, we CAN compost the pumpkins here with your help!
Here’s how you can compost your pumpkins this year:
♻️ Bring your pumpkins to a community smash! (Dates coming out soon!)
♻️ Drop off your pumpkins with your weekly compost at our drop off container in Holmesburg, or with our friends at West Philly Tool Library (make sure pumpkin is broken up and in bucket, thus option intended for a few pumpkins, not a truckload!)
♻️ Put your pumpkins in or on top of your bucket with your weekly pickup.
♻️ If you have a dozen plus pumpkins, please DM us to get a quote for removal!

Namasté put: 🧘 if you tends to grow legs, we'd be happy to lock it down for you. Add a lock to your bucket any time in your online account for just $10.
We've been operating in Philly for almost two decades now, and throughout that time we've fine-tuned our weekly pickup service to withstand the onslaught of city living:
🪣 Our buckets are Philly-tough, with a snap on lid that keeps smells in, and pests out. In fact, it's so good that you can store your bucket indoors, or out, without worry.
🫧 You can add a weekly bucket wash to your subscription at any time for maximum cleanliness and convenience. If you want to save a few bucks, you can rinse out your bucket yourself; we suggest weekly. Either way, we suggest you line your bucket with a brown paper grocery bag for easy emptying and cleaning.
📆 We will pick up your bucket no matter what. Hurricane? No problem. Snow? We'll be there. Eagles win? We'll still arrive as scheduled. On the rare occasion when your pickup day is delayed, we'll email you asap, and make sure info is up to date in your online account.
🌱 Since we're picking up from you weekly, we can also deliver compost products weekly! This includes bulk deliveries, via truckload or in rollers narrow enough to fit down those little alleys that go to your back yard.

Brown and yellow, spotty leaves on your tomato plant means disease 😵 Get your last tomatoes off, and take them out. Remove all leaves and rotting fruit from the ground, and pull up from the roots (this is one of the only times we’ll tell you to remove the roots!) This will cut down on tomato blight in the soil next year, and less disease pressure for next year’s plants.
While our piles get hot enough to kill most plant pathogens, we still will ask that you not include diseased plants in your compost. That includes:
🍅 diseased tomato plants
🌱 leaves and foliage with powdery mildew
💐 crinkled or misshapen leaves on tubers like dahlias

Back to school - on the farm! Did you know: Philadelphia is home to one of the top environmental sciences high schools in the country, WB Saul! And, yes: they have a whole farm, right on campus!
Since 2013, we’ve partnered with Saul to help manage a truly full-circle composting program, bringing together food scraps from the cafeteria and manure from the school’s livestock. Students see firsthand how those materials become a valuable resource for the farm’s fields and gardens, rather than landfill-bound waste.
Our team also brings composting into the classroom through hands-on education, internships, and opportunities for student enrichment. We coordinate finished compost from the site, helping support school activities and student scholarships along the way.
Plus, Saul hosts our annual compost day - a day where anyone can come and get some fresh compost, absolutely free! Stay tuned for a save the date, coming soon!
These students get it. They are learning how healthy soil, local food, animal care, and ethical waste management are all connected, and they’re helping build a more resilient Philly, from the ground up.

Doomerism is lame, and factually inaccurate: 👀 Don’t buy the oversimplified idea that there’s nothing we can do about climate change. The future isn’t locked in; what we do next matters most.
These reports often overlook the massive collective effort already underway: building cleaner systems, solving everyday problems, innovating, and showing up for one another.
They don’t account for us, or for the millions of pounds of food waste we’ve diverted, and recycled into compost for our community’s gardens, parks and green spaces.
They don’t account for the nearly 10,000 households and hundreds of businesses already composting with us.
And they don’t account for the millions more pounds we’ll compost in the years ahead.
Companies like ours are taking root across the country, keeping composting local, ethical, and earth-aligned.
Here’s the point: if you want a future worth living in, act like it’s worth building. Compost with a service like ours. Compost at home. Participate in your community. Join a garden. Get connected. Make things happen.
Because at the end of the day, change takes time - but time passes anyway. Make it count.

Gritty turns local leftovers into a seriously good-looking soil mix: crushed bottle glass sourced by Bottle Underground and upcycled into touch safe glass sand by their partner, Remark Glass, our compost made right here in Philly, and biochar.
So instead of shipping waste somewhere far away, we keep it close, give it a glow-up, and let it help your succulents live their best lives.
Sparkly? Yes.
Plant-friendly? Also yes.
Made from Philly’s own “wait, we can use that”? Always.

It’s “they,” and there are over 10,000 of them: 🪱 our worms! Our worms are hard at work, breaking down food scraps into , the most interesting of all the composts:
🪱 it’s a biologically active soil amendment, meaning - it’s packed with beneficial microbes that help cycle nutrients and supports root health
🪱 its nutrients are more available to plants, aka easier to absorb for well-nourished, healthy plants.
🪱 it improves both soil structure and root health simultaneously, improving plant resilience, especially during these hot summers
Use indoors on house plants, or outside as a soil amendment around the base of plants.
