Three Years ago, I organized one of the first roundtables that addressed passive house buildings and public health. This is why affordable housing is so important: it should be built to Passive House standards for health, durability, resilience and stable utility bills.
I have seen low-quality, affordable houses and wasted tax dollars on the false idea that low-cost housing saves money. In fact, these buildings deteriorate rapidly. I did audits on some of these buildings, falling apart [part after only 10 years, requiring more money to remediate them, but the occupants experienced a higher rate of respiratory and health problems, think emergency room visits, and absenteeism at work and school.
When will we learn that when we honor everyone with a healthy home, we improve well-being, educational and employment attendance and outcomes. reduce the stress if living on subsistence wages, and yes, we will save tax dollars!
Without quality housing, we
burden already heavily burdened people with additional challenges to meet their daily needs, much inhibit their opportunity to get ahead.
