My painting The Cafe on Spruce St. will be in the exhibition "Urban Takes" at MH Gallery, 42 W. Market Street, Marietta, PA from March 1st through April 12. I'm excited to have this piece in this exhibit which features art inspired by the urban landscape by artists in the region.

My latest series was sparked by a trip to Scotland, where I was captivated by the moody colors, expansive vistas, and the striking contrasts between water, land, sky, and ocean. The blend of historic architecture, untouched landscapes, and lush greenery compelled me to create a series celebrating these memorable scenes.

The recent piece I finished was inspired by a day trip I took with my fiancé to Morris Arboretum last summer. I loved the variety of flowers and greenery that were spread out throughout the garden. This garden patch caught my attention with the pink and purple blooms as well as the variety of green leaves.

One of the ways I am trying to expand my abilities is to try painting more florals. I haven’t ever really focused on florals and greenery, and this series has really forced me to jump in and test myself. I’m enjoying the challenge and look forward to the next pieces that I have set up to work on.

I took this picture when I was walking around Philly for my first Philadelphia inspired landscape series. It is of a section of buildings in Headhouse Row near South Street. It was pretty early in the morning on an autumn day, and I was inspired by the way the light was shining down and creating a pretty contrast of light and shadow. I never completed the painting I was going to make inspired by this scene, but I still enjoy this photo as an example of how pretty Philly can be.

Sometimes it is fun to look at how your art has progressed and changed over the years. These are some paintings from the past 10 years, going from newest to oldest. It’s hard to believe that it’s been 10 years since I painted those Japanese scenes, but it shows me my growth and how my subject and what I want to express through my art has morphed throughout the years.

A Moment of Peace

This painting was inspired by a part of the Schuylkill River Bike Trail that I used to ride past every day on my commute to work. During the summer the leaves are abundant, and flowers are blossoming extravagantly. I was particularly struck by the way the bridge peeked through the acne to interject its hard lines and sharp perspective. The contrast between the natural and manmade struck mee, and I had to take a picture to use as a reference for what became this painting.

Waiting for the Train Together

This painting was inspired by a moment I saw when I was waiting for the MFL train here in Philly. The body language of the couple, the lights and shadows on the platform, all of these things combined to create an interesting moment for me. I like how paintings don’t always have to be of something idyllic. They can be a regular moment in everyday life. It all depends on what strikes you at the moment.

How I Plan a Painting from Start to Finish — Erica Jackson When I am planning a new series I usually am planning it based on a certain place or exploring a certain local area.

My latest series was inspired by a trip I took to Scotland a couple of years ago. I was captivated by the moody colors, expansive vistas, and the striking contrasts between water, land, sky, and ocean. The blend of historic architecture, untouched landscapes, and lush greenery compelled me to create a series celebrating these memorable scenes.

This photo didn’t end up making it into my painting series, but I did really like this little vista. It was taken at the Royal Botanic Garden in Edinburgh. I loved all of the different shades of green and the brightness of the blue sky. It was an idyllic moment on a memorable trip.
