Currently streaming on AMC+ and Shudder, this film functions as a suitably fantastical sequel to the legendary 1920 silent The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, introducing the granddaughter of the infamous hypnotist who carries on the family legacy by subjecting patients in her institute to bizarre, sadistic psycho-sexual experiments.

A campy fever dream set in a blacked-out nightmare world which savagely parodies our own, Dr. Caligari is that rare midnight movie that holds up in daylight, thanks to brilliant direction by Stephen Sayadian of his script cowritten with Jerry Stahl. Presented with deadpan humor by an extremely daring cast, this film remains a rite of passage for ‘80s film aficionados and holds up to endless rewatches — especially now that you can see every color and hear every word of dialogue as originally intended.

Sugar-dusted Honiton lace and vanilla moire stained at the hem with black tea and tonka, translucent orange blossoms veined like dragonfly wings pressed to the bodice, and a splatter of coppery, clove-tinged blood on the pearl-dotted sleeves.

A dreary Victorian house upon the moors: rain-soaked stone, faded velvet, candlewax and tarnished silver, tapestry-lined hallways and creaking oak staircases leading past a gallery of ruined portraits.
