1. A key attraction in Cáceres is Arco de la Estrella. It began as a 15th-century entrance called Puerta Nueva and was remodelled in the 18th century. You may recognize it as a filming location in Game of Thrones.

2. Plaza Mayor dates back to the 12th century and it quickly became the commercial heart of the city. Today, the plaza is full of cafes and restaurants, as well as several historic landmarks.

3. Plaza de Santa María was once used as a marketplace, and it later became the religious and political centre of medieval life in the city. This is where you’ll find some of the most beautiful palaces in Cáceres‎, and it’s another stunning GoT filming location.

4. Did you know you can buy cookies from nuns in Cáceres‎? Convento de San Pablo is where you can place your order (with cash) and try some traditional recipes. The cookies are passed through a rotating hatch once you place your money there, so you never actually see the nuns.

5. The historic Plaza de San Jorge is dominated by an 18th-century church that’s perfect for photographs. If the doors of the church are open, make sure you pop inside for a quick look.

6. One of my favourite places to visit in Cáceres‎ is Torre de los Pozos. This 12th-century Almohad tower once formed part of the city’s defenses, and it helped to protect wells that supplied the walled city with water during a siege.

7. There are a lot of great things to do in Cáceres‎ during a day trip, but nothing quite beats taking a casual stroll through the old town. The walled city has been beautifully preserved, and it really feels like you’re walking through history. It’s easy to see why it was used to film scenes from King’s Landing in GoT.
