Earlier this month, SFSR and Camden for Clean Air completed its Sewage Flooding Workshop series!
💧The three sessions, held from July to August, gathered 20 City of Camden community members who wanted to learn about the environmental impacts of combined sewage flooding, enhance their advocacy skills, and explore how they can influence decisions that affect their neighborhoods.
🧠🫂We deeply appreciate the participants for spending some of their summer with us to understand CSOs and share their personal stories and perspectives as Camden residents.
SFSR and Camden for Clean Air look forward to continuing to work with them to spread awareness on the CSO issue and how it intersects with other environmental injustices our communities face. 🗑️🌧️💩🌊

A huge thank you to Camden County Library System for hosting us!
On July 18, SFSR and Camden for Clean Air hosted the first workshop within the Sewage Flooding Workshop series! 🌧️🌊
Participants met in person to get to know one another and learn about sewage flooding in Camden, including the historical context, environmental impacts, and progress made to date.
🌿Thank you to Meishka Mitchell, Lecturer of Environmental Justice at Rutgers University and Founder of Black Girl Kinda Green, for sharing your knowledge with the group and helping contextualize the flooding and combined sewer overflow issue in Camden.
🚰 Thank you to Andy Kricun, Principal at Moonshot Missions, Co-Chair of Jersey Water Works Steering and CSO Committees, and former Executive Director of Camden County Municipal Utilities Authority, for providing some insight into the role of a wastewater utility and the nuances in Camden’s water system!
🔮 During the next two workshops, participants will gather to deepen their understanding, learn from experts, and develop actionable plans for how they can influence change to help resolve the flooding issues they face every time it rains in Camden.

Last week, SFSR tabled at the Hackensack River Nation Summit hosted by 🌊 We had a lovely time speaking to attendees about CSOs and the plans in place to mitigate them in the surrounding areas of Hackensack, Fort Lee, and Ridgefield Park.
🚧
We also had the chance to attend the stormwater utility session, which highlighted CSO towns as municipalities that should take advantage of SWUs.

Last weekend, the SFSR campaign participated in the Environmental Health Tour of Jersey City!
The tour took us through the neighborhoods of Greenville, Bergen-Lafayette, and West Side in Jersey City and brought together local expertise, statewide perspectives, and academic insight from across the various environmental justice issues the community faces, including:
☣️ various contaminated land sites
🏚️ risks from the aging housing stock
🛳️ air pollution from the nearby ports and incinerators ♻️
✈️ noise pollution from airplanes
🌊 vulnerability to climate change and flooding
The tour also highlighted the work being done across the community and the state to address these environmental health challenges.
Ultimately, we deepened our shared understanding of collaboration. It was clear that we cannot solve one EJ issue without also addressing others. In the coming months, SFSR will explore how to illustrate the cross-connection between combined sewer overflows and other environmental issues.
