Meet Butcher, his brand-new Boston Terrier: tiny tuxedo, enormous opinions, and a firm belief that Peet’s arms, sleeves, shoes, and shoelaces are all puppy toys.
Yes, dog trainers’ puppies bite their clothes too. So Peet is practicing something we call “bite this, not that.” Puppies are going to chew and bite. Our job is to teach them what is okay to put their mouths on: a toy instead of your sock, a Benebone instead of the table leg, a stuffy instead of your hand. Then you do it again. And again. If you feel like you’re redirecting your puppy constantly, you’re probably on the right track.

This little guy’s gait of choice is ricochet—and his preferred method of travel is parkour.
Instead of letting him bounce around at the end of the leash, I close my hands, limit the movement, and wait. The moment he checks in with me, I reward him.
In riding, we’d call this a half halt: a brief moment of connection that says, “Hey. Come back to me. Let’s rebalance before we keep going.”
I’m not asking him to remain perfectly still or extinguishing all that joyful baby-dog chaos. I’m teaching him that even when his body wants to go in seventeen different directions, he can pause, find me, and respond.

A Beagle so nice, we’re posting her twice. Honestly, so many of you loved Ophelia the Beagle yesterday that we wanted to show you what she was up to today. Also, paws up for Finn the doodle, who actually understood the assignment.
You can’t train the beagle out of the beagle.
But you can negotiate with a beagle. Teach them to make the decisions you wanted them to make all along — while letting them think it was their idea.
Honestly, that’s most of beagle training.
