The future health of our community begins with our children. Kelly needs a playground! We all need a more vibrant community space! John B. But it’s an empty space.

Together, we want to create a space that nurtures care for the place we all live, enacts good greening practices and creates a healthy space for our kids and adults to play and interact. Kelly School sits near the center of our Germantown neighborhood. With nearly 500 students, most of our neighborhood’s children attend Kelly. Our kids deserve more. We all do. Hansberry Garden & Nature Center has included this effort as part of its mission “to foster the values and attitudes among people that motivate active involvement in the stewardship of our urban environment.”

Greening efforts will require the assistance of volunteers in renovating raised bed gardens, developing a rain garden to capture storm water, planting a long steep slope with native plants. Grants and foundations are being solicited to assist in the “heavy lifting” projects: installing a “wellness path”, building a playground, creating a performance space and other renovations. Special events will engage the entire community in supporting Kelly and its large yard as our community’s resource.

Have you stopped by the Kelly School meadow? A small but lively green space in the front of the school. A place to check out native plants and the wildlife they attract!

The Kelly School garden is showing off again. Bok Choy, kale, radishes, lettuce and more harvested. All shared with friends who come to join the fun. Kelly school neighbors always welcome for our Sunday morning sessions!
