🏗️ New proposal could encourage redevelopment of vacant properties in Philadelphia

Mayor Cherelle Parker is asking City Council to consider a proposed 20-year property tax abatement aimed at encouraging the redevelopment of long-vacant and deteriorated properties.

The proposal could apply to properties such as empty office buildings, industrial sites, and former schools that are converted into housing. The administration says the proposed abatement would be more targeted than Philadelphia’s existing 10-year tax abatement.

However, the proposal is still being discussed. Some Council members have raised questions about creating another tax break while the city and school district face ongoing revenue needs, and Council President Kenyatta Johnson has called for an affordable-housing component.

No legislation has been formally introduced to Council yet, so this is definitely one to keep an eye on as Philadelphia continues looking for ways to bring vacant properties back into use.
