Everyone does classroom training. How many do ride alongs? Give your techs a HITT!

Teach them!!

Who’s getting their HITT this week?

Every week you wait is another week your techs keep running the same calls, making the same mistakes, and leaving money on the table. That’s another week of missed opportunities, lower average tickets, and customers who could have become lifelong clients.

The question isn’t whether training works. It’s how much waiting is costing you.

What are you waiting for?

Let’s get your team the HITT they deserve.

The whole goal of a question is to get more understanding.

Asking yes or no questions doesn’t gain us much.

If we rephrase our questions, we get better answers which give us better information to offer better solutions.

People want more but sometimes those things are tough to uncover.

Asking better questions will get you there much faster.

People think electricians just show up, flip a switch, and hand over a bill.

What they don’t see is this.

The investigating.
The troubleshooting.
The years of experience it takes to know where to look next.

Before we can recommend a solution, we have to understand the problem. Sometimes that means standing in front of a panel for 30 seconds. Sometimes it’s 30 minutes. Every clue matters.

The best technicians don’t guess. They inspect. They test. They think.

Because the goal isn’t to sell a repair.

The goal is to find the right solution the first time.

That’s what separates a parts changer from a professional. 💪⚡

One of the greatest parts of being a service technician has nothing to do with electricity, plumbing, or HVAC. It has everything to do with people.

Every home has a story. Sometimes it’s a military flag on the wall. Sometimes it’s a picture of their grandkids. Sometimes it’s an old car in the garage. Today it was this custom leather pouch from the 1996 Oregon State Shoot.

Most technicians would walk right past it because they’re focused on getting to the panel. I stopped, asked about it, and suddenly I wasn’t talking to a customer anymore. I was talking to someone who was proud of an accomplishment, excited to share a piece of their life, and appreciated that someone noticed.

That conversation didn’t cost me a minute. It bought me something much more valuable. Trust.

The best technicians don’t just inspect electrical systems. They inspect the home for opportunities to connect with the people who live there. If you walk into a house and immediately start talking about breakers, wires, and prices, you’re just another contractor. If you take a genuine interest in the homeowner first, you become someone they enjoy having in their home.

The funny thing is, every house gives you the answers. Trophies. Hunting mounts. Family photos. Vacation souvenirs. Sports memorabilia. Musical instruments. Antique collections. They’re all conversation starters just waiting to be noticed.

People love talking about the things they’re passionate about. When they know you care about them as a person, they naturally become more comfortable listening to what you have to say.

Slow down.

Look around.

Be curious.

The coolest thing you find in the home might not be the electrical issue. It might be the conversation that turns a service call into a lifelong customer.

“My husband can do it.”

Perspective is a funny thing.

I grew up on the East Coast. Beaches, flat land, and basically sea level. If you wanted a view, you climbed a lifeguard stand.

Then I found myself standing here… 10,560 feet above sea level. Two miles up.

It got me thinking.

What feels completely normal to one person can seem absolutely crazy to someone else. Mountains are just another Tuesday for the people who live here. Back home, this is something we’d drive hours just to see.

The same thing happens in business and in life.

What’s easy for you might be overwhelming to someone else. What’s routine to them might be something you’ve never even considered.

That’s why it’s important to stay curious instead of judgmental. Ask questions. Learn how other people see the world. The more perspectives you experience, the bigger your own world becomes.

Sometimes growth isn’t about changing where you’re going.

It’s about changing where you’re standing.

Labeling! Use it!

This suitcase got beat up.

The airline made a mistake. The baggage handlers made a mistake. Somebody dropped the ball.

But here’s the thing…

Mistakes happen.

In business, we’re all going to dent a suitcase, miss a detail, forget a step, or disappoint a customer at some point. The companies that win aren’t the ones that never make mistakes. They’re the ones that own them, fix them, and learn from them.

Customers are usually pretty forgiving when you take responsibility.

What they don’t forgive is excuses, finger-pointing, or pretending the problem doesn’t exist.

Character isn’t revealed when everything goes right.

Character is revealed when something goes wrong.

The mistake may not be your fault, but how you handle it is always your responsibility.

That’s where trust is built.

That’s where reputations are earned.

And that’s where good companies separate themselves from great ones. 💪

One of my favorite parts of running service calls has nothing to do with electrical work.

Customers have some seriously cool stuff.

Today I came across this old Schwinn display hanging in a garage. Most techs would walk right past it. I stopped and asked about it. That simple conversation turned into a story, and that story turned into trust.

The best salespeople aren’t always the best talkers. They’re the best listeners.

Every home has clues. Pictures, trophies, motorcycles, old signs, classic cars, collectibles. People love sharing the things they’re passionate about. When you slow down long enough to notice, you stop being “the electrician” and start becoming someone they enjoy having in their home.

People buy from people they like.
People like people who take a genuine interest in them.

The next time you’re on a service call, look around. The panel might need attention, but so does the person who owns it.

You never know what cool story is hanging on the wall. 🚲⚡️
