“I look amazing!” is great feedback. But it’s not the feedback I’m really chasing.

Of course, I want my clients to look as good as they possibly can in their headshots. But for a business headshot, there’s another layer to it.

What does “looking confident” actually mean in a headshot?

Here’s a before-and-after that helps break it down. Same person. Very different message.

Good headshot lighting isn’t just about making the photo brighter or more flattering.

Take a look at this before-and-after. The original image was shot with lighting that’s coming more from the side or underneath, and you can see how that affects the eyes.

If you wear glasses, here’s a small detail that can make a big difference in your headshot. 👓

A small change in body language can completely change the feel of a headshot.

In one, the head is tilted back and slightly away. To me, that creates a softer, less poised feeling. It’s not necessarily a bad pose, but it doesn’t communicate the kind of confidence and presence I’m usually looking for in a business or executive headshot.

Take a look at these two examples.

That conference headshot might get you by. But when your headshot really matters, having the time and control of a studio session makes a difference.

Crossed arms, dramatic body language, interesting angles. None of that can rescue a headshot with a dead expression or that classic “deer in the headlights” look.
In fact, I’d argue the opposite.
