New federal changes could shift more SNAP costs onto states and affect access to food assistance.

PA Health & Wellness presented Share Food Program with $150,000 to support breakfast and lunch for school-aged children during breaks from school in partnership with the Norristown Area School District.

This generous funding will support a pilot program, the School Break Meals Initiative, in providing 6,000 meal boxes to families during times when they may experience increased food needs and budget constraints.

Breaks from school mean children lose access to the regular meals they receive during the school day—for some kids, this is the only reliable source of food they have. This new initiative builds upon the success of the Summer Meal program that Norristown Area School District and Share Food Program partnered on in July and August 2026, which was also supported by crucial PA Health & Wellness funding.

We met Sam as he was picking up food at one of our partner pantries this summer. Sam works hard as a school bus driver, and when he’s not driving, he enjoys reading and tending to his garden.

He spends his days making sure kids get to where they need, but his paycheck doesn’t always stretch far enough. Talking to Sam, he told us that there were times he had to choose between affording gas to get to work and putting food on the table for his family. That is not a choice anyone should have to make.
