🚲🛴 Know Before You Ride!

PennDOT has released an updated PA Micromobility Information Sheet outlining the laws and regulations for bicycles, e-bikes, motorized pedalcycles, motor scooters, electric scooters, and other micromobility devices.

Whether you're commuting, exercising, or just enjoying a ride, it's important to understand the rules of the road to help keep yourself and others safe.

Take a few moments to review the information below and be sure you're riding legally and responsibly.

🟣The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has declared a statewide Code Purple Air Quality Action Day for Particle Pollution for Friday, July 17, 2026, for fine particulate matter (PM2.5). Wildfire smoke from Ontario, Canada and Minnesota continues to worsen air quality across Pennsylvania.🟣

Code Purple air quality is classified as very unhealthy. All people should limit or avoid outdoor activities. Pets and other animals should be kept indoors to the extent possible.

Guidance on Limiting Exposure
• Everyone: Limit outdoor physical activity and go indoors to cleaner air if experiencing symptoms like coughing or shortness of breath.
• Sensitive Groups: Individuals with chronic conditions such as heart and lung disease, older adults, children and teenagers, pregnant women, and people with limited ability should avoid all physical activity outdoors to reduce exposures to outdoor air.
• Keep indoor air safe by closing windows. If you have air conditioning and your system allows it, consider using the indoor recirculating function and/or installing a high efficiency filter. If you do not have air conditioning, staying inside with windows closed may be dangerous in hot weather. If you are hot, go someplace with air conditioning. Check 211 (www.pa211.org) to find a cooling center near you.
• Be aware that an N95 mask can provide some protection; however, surgical and cloth masks will not provide protection due to the size of the pollution particles.
If you are experiencing severe shortness of breath or chest tightness, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. If you are experiencing minor or controllable symptoms, consider contacting your health care provider.

What to Expect in the Days Ahead
According to AirNow, smoke levels will continue to be intense Friday, with concentrations rising to code PURPLE (Very Unhealthy) category. High moderate ozone is again likely during the afternoon. At this time, air quality is expected to improve on Saturday but remain unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Ways to Reduce Air Pollution
• Limit the use of fire pits.
• Conserve electricity by setting air conditioning to a higher temperature.
• Combine errands to reduce vehicle trips.
• Limit engine idling
• Refuel cars and trucks after dusk.
• Limit oil-based cooking, such as grilling or frying food.

There has been an uptick in vehicles being rummaged through, as well as a few vehicle thefts in the area in recent weeks.

We encourage all residents to take a few simple precautions to help reduce the risk of becoming a victim:

• Always lock your vehicle, even if it is parked in your driveway.

• Take your key fob with you or keep it securely inside your home. **Never leave your key fob inside your vehicle**, even if the vehicle is locked.

• Remove valuables from your vehicle. Items such as wallets, purses, electronics, bags, loose change, and fi****ms can attract thieves.

• Park in well-lit areas whenever possible. Motion-activated exterior lighting around your driveway or parking area can also help deter criminal activity.

• Consider installing security cameras or a video doorbell to help monitor your property and provide valuable evidence if a crime occurs.

• Close all windows and ensure all doors are locked before leaving your vehicle, even if you will only be away for a few minutes.

Taking these simple steps can significantly reduce the opportunity for theft and help keep our neighborhoods safe.

If you observe suspicious activity in your neighborhood, especially individuals checking vehicle door handles or looking into parked cars, please report it to the Springfield Township Police Department as soon as possible. Your vigilance can help prevent crimes and assist officers in identifying those responsible.

As a complimentary service for Springfield Township residents, officers on patrol will conduct periodic checks of your home while you're away on vacation or a business trip. While no program can guarantee the security of your property, these extra patrols provide another set of eyes in our neighborhoods and can help you enjoy your time away with added peace of mind.

The Springfield Township Police Department stands in solidarity with the Pennsylvania State Police as we honor the service and sacrifice of Trooper Michael E. Pahira Jr. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and fellow officers during this difficult time. We remember his dedication to protecting our communities and the brave work of all who wear the badge. Rest in peace, Trooper Pahira.

The Department is deeply saddened to announce the loss of a dedicated member of our ranks, Trooper Michael E. Pahira, Jr. He was assigned as a Motor Carrier Inspector at PSP Frackville and was killed in the line of duty on July 1. Read more at bit.ly/PSP-MEP26.

The annual Independence Day Parade is returning to Oreland on July 4th, 2026 beginning at 10:00 AM. This parade will feature many exciting attractions and performances for residents to enjoy. The Board of Commissioners encourages all Township residents to come out and celebrate the birth of our nation!

In honor of America’s 250th anniversary, Montgomery County Commissioners have sponsored a $500 grant to purchase special 250th anniversary flags that will be given out at the Independence Day parade.

The Oreland Lions Club, together with the Oreland Volunteer Fire Company, will celebrate Independence Day with a parade that will begin at 10 AM at Twining Road and Wischman Avenue in Upper Dublin Township. The parade will cross into Springfield Township at Bridge Street approximately 30 minutes later, where it will proceed to Bruce Road, Allison Road and Lyster Road. The parade will conclude at approximately 11:30 AM at Marlow Field with refreshments and awards presented by the Lions Club. See the below graphic for a detailed parade route.
