UNPOPULAR OPINION: “Know your contract” shouldn’t be controversial. 👀

We saw a post from a real estate board member criticizing agents for not catching another agent’s contractual mistake—and we genuinely disagree with the message.

If a buyer’s agent forgets to request the refrigerator, washer/dryer, home warranty, concessions, or another term for their client, the listing agent is entitled to rely on the contract as written.

That isn’t a “gotcha.” It isn’t inexperienced. And it isn’t unethical.

As REALTORS®, we owe honesty and fair dealing to everyone involved, while owing loyalty and advocacy to our own clients. Fair dealing does not mean negotiating against our client because another licensed professional omitted something from their contract.

And if we made that mistake? We’d own it. In fact, we have!!!! Lauren and I have come out of pocket to buy just these appliances and we didn’t even make a mistake this direct but we’re not going to preach unless we live by our word.

If our buyer expected appliances and we failed to properly include them, our commission would be covering those appliances. We wouldn’t blame the listing agent for failing to double-check our work.

Here at W and Partners, we believe strongly in mentorship—but mentorship and accountability go hand in hand.

We teach our agents to:

Know the contract. Ask questions. Protect your client. Own your mistakes.

We don’t teach them to expect the agent on the other side to catch what they missed.

Professional courtesy is important. Professional competence is essential.

And as an industry, we believe that’s the standard we should be promoting—especially from those in leadership.

Sometimes you have to look at life through rose-colored glasses… even if they’re technically pink. 🩷🌹

It doesn’t mean ignoring the hard moments. It means choosing to notice the beauty, hold onto hope, and believe brighter days are still ahead.

Life may not always be perfect, but your perspective can make it feel a little more beautiful. So wear the pink glasses, find the good, and keep going. ✨
