I was supposed to be at a baseball game last night.
Instead, I accidentally sliced my hand while cleaning a very sharp knife and ended up unexpectedly in the ER. Three internal stitches, five surface stitches, and a very kind doctor later… here I am.
And, of course, the psychologist in me couldn't help but find the metaphor.
Sometimes we get hurt while we're simply trying to clean things up.
We don't plan for it. We don't see it coming. And suddenly, the evening we had envisioned looks completely different.
But here's the thing: we don't always get to choose what happens to us. We do get to choose how we respond.
I could have been frustrated that I missed the game. Instead, I found myself grateful for good medical care, a compassionate doctor, and the ability to stay calm and positive through an unexpected detour.
And those stitches got me thinking about therapy, too.
Some wounds are visible. Others are underneath the surface.
Three internal stitches. Five on the outside. Both were necessary for healing.
Maybe that's true for us, too. The work that nobody sees can be just as important as the healing everyone else can see.
Sometimes life doesn't give us the evening we planned.
Sometimes it gives us stitches.
And sometimes, those stitches become part of the story of how we healed. ❤️🩹

There she is!
Eight years old, looking into a future she couldn't yet imagine.
She had no language for what she was feeling, only a tender heart trying to make sense of a complicated world. She didn't know that the experiences shaping her would one day become the very places from which she would help others heal.
People often ask why I became a psychologist.
The answer is her.
Because somewhere along the way, I learned that we never really outgrow our younger selves. We simply become the adults they have been waiting for.
I still carry her wonder. Her sensitivity. Her fears. Her longing to belong.
But today, she is no longer carrying them alone.
I have become the safe place she was searching for. The voice that reminds her she is worthy. The hands that hold her when life feels uncertain. The protector she deserved all along.
Healing isn't forgetting who we were.
It's returning to that little girl, taking her hand, and whispering, "You don't have to do this by yourself anymore."
And every time I sit across from a client, I remember that many of us are simply grown-ups learning how to care for the child still living inside us.
Little me... I've got you now. 🤍

Tossing. Turning. Watching the clock. 😴
If you've ever thought, "Why can't I just fall asleep?" You're not alone. Poor sleep isn't always about having a "busy brain." Often, it's the habits, routines, environment, and thoughts we've developed around sleep that keep us stuck.
As a therapist trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I), I help clients improve sleep without relying solely on medication. Together, we work to:
✨ Build healthy sleep habits and routines
✨ Create a bedroom environment that supports restful sleep
✨ Reduce anxiety and overthinking about sleep
✨ Retrain unhelpful beliefs and thought patterns about sleep before your head even hits the pillow
Quality sleep isn't a luxury, it's essential for your mental health, relationships, work, and overall well-being.
You don't have to spend another night fighting your mind. Restful sleep is a skill, and it can be learned.

When You Don't Show Up
One of the things people don't often realize about therapy is that therapists care deeply about the people they work with.
The relationship we build isn't a friendship, but it is a meaningful, professional connection rooted in trust, compassion, and genuine concern for your well-being. Week after week, I have the privilege of hearing your story, celebrating your victories, sitting with you in your pain, and witnessing your growth. That kind of work naturally creates a sense of care.
So, when you don't show up for a session, my first thought usually isn't about the missed appointment.
It's, "I hope they're okay."
I wonder if something unexpected happened. I hope you simply lost track of time or had something come up. But I also know that sometimes people miss therapy because life feels overwhelming, or because they're struggling more than usual. As your therapist, I take your safety and well-being seriously, and part of my professional responsibility is to check in when something feels out of the ordinary.
If you ever receive a message from me after a missed appointment, please know it isn't about making you feel guilty or reminding you of a policy. It's because I care. It's because your well-being matters to me, and I want to know that you're safe.
Therapists are human, too. We worry. We hope. We care.
It is truly an honor to be invited into someone's life during both the hardest and the most meaningful moments. I never take that privilege lightly, and I hope every client knows this: you are more than an appointment on my calendar. You are a person whose story matters, and your well-being will always matter to me.
Sincerely, Dr. Horn

I often talk with clients about the importance of creating environments that foster connection, predictability, and emotional well-being. One often overlooked source of joy and stability? Our relationships with our dogs.
Training isn't just about obedience—it's about communication, trust, and strengthening the bond you share with your pet. Positive interactions with our dogs can boost dopamine, reinforce feelings of connection, and create a greater sense of peace and confidence within the home. Consistent training also provides structure, which benefits both humans and animals alike.
If you're looking for a compassionate and effective dog training experience, I highly recommend Fit Dog Training with Elisa Finer Levenbaum serving the Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Cave Creek areas. Investing in your dog's growth is also an investment in your family's well-being. The result is often more than a well-trained dog—it's a calmer home, a deeper relationship, and more moments of joy together.

An open letter to my couples getting married soon:
As you prepare to exchange your vows next week, my hope for you is that you continue to be a safe haven and secure base for one another. May you always find the courage to turn toward each other with openness, compassion, and curiosity—especially in life's more challenging moments. The love you've nurtured and the bond you've strengthened are beautiful foundations for marriage. As you begin this new chapter, may Hold Me Tight serve as a reminder that the deepest strength in a relationship comes from reaching for one another and knowing that, no matter what, you are not alone. Wishing you a lifetime of connection, laughter, and enduring love.

The Sacred Space of the Therapy Room: My Reflection on Witnessing Change
In the quiet of the therapy room, there is a unique kind of beauty found in the "mess." As a therapist, I am often asked what it’s like to sit with people in their most difficult moments—their deepest heartaches, their rawest emotions, and their most vulnerable desires. The truth is, I love it.
There is a profound, almost sacred privilege in being invited into a client's internal world. To witness the months of emotional and mental labor that go into true transformation is nothing short of awe-inspiring. I am constantly amazed by the resilience of the human spirit and what individuals are capable of when they commit to the demanding, often uncomfortable work of healing.
While my clinical focus is always entirely on the person sitting across from me, there is a side of the process that often goes unspoken: how this work changes me.
Clients may not always realize that their journey facilitates my own growth—not just as a clinician, but as a human being. Every day, I am bolstered by the bravery I see. I am encouraged by the risks my clients take—the courageous leaps into honesty with themselves and the difficult, necessary conversations they initiate with their loved ones.
Walking alongside someone as they navigate their path toward healing is an immense honor. To be even a small part of that process is a gift that leaves me more hopeful, more empathetic, and deeply grateful for the work I get to do every day.
