Lauren Catuzzi Grandcolas, 38. Three months pregnant.

Jennifer L. Howley, 34. Five months pregnant.

Helen Crossin Kittle, 34. Five months pregnant.

Vanessa Lang Langer, 29. Four months pregnant.

Patricia Ann Cimaroli Massari, 25. Found out she was pregnant that morning.

Renée A. May, 39. American Airlines Flight 77 flight attendant, engaged and pregnant.

Sylvia San Pio Resta, 26. Seven months pregnant, one week from maternity leave. Husband John Resta also died with her in the North Tower. Family members described losing three people.

Rahma Salie, 28. Seven months pregnant.

Dianne T. Signer, 32. Three months pregnant, five days from her wedding.

Never forget.

We always talk about where we were when 9/11 happened. Or, what we were doing. My toddler son and I had spent the night with a friend and her little girl, and had woke up to make biscuits and gravy for breakfast, whenever her mom called telling us to turn on the television. When we did, of course our mouths hit the floor. 

As I watched in absolute horror what was being carried out, while simultaneously watching my little boy who was walking around in complete and utter innocence, was humbling. The two didn’t match up.

But all of the thousands that lost their lives, our hearts and prayers remain with their families. We are so incredibly sorry. This is a tragedy that never should have occurred.

But also, I reflect on the people that survived, and what they had to endure. I always think of Marcy. Her story is below.

Twenty-five years ago today, Marcy Borders walked out of the World Trade Center and into one of the most unforgettable photographs of September 11.

Borders was 28 and working for Bank of America on the 81st floor of the North Tower when the attack began.

She escaped the building and was caught in the enormous cloud of dust and debris that swept through Lower Manhattan after the towers collapsed.

AFP photographer Stan Honda photographed her moments later, her hair, face and clothing completely coated in gray dust.

The image traveled around the world, and Borders became known as the "Dust Lady."

Fourteen years later, in August 2015, she died from stomach cancer at just 42.

Borders believed the illness was connected to the toxic dust she had inhaled on 9/11, although a direct causal link in her individual case was not established publicly.

What is known is that the dust generated by the World Trade Center collapse contained hazardous substances, and decades of research have documented serious illnesses among people exposed to the disaster and its aftermath. The CDC's World Trade Center Health Program includes cancers among recognized WTC-related conditions, with stomach cancer specifically included on its official list.

Twenty-five years later, Borders' photograph remains a haunting reminder that the consequences of September 11 did not end when the dust settled.
