Happy Birthday to Jacob Ivy, our Urban Forestry Field Specialist! If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ve seen Jacob giving our how-to educational videos on treecare and mesquite pods, and you’ve probably seen him at our events as well! He works TM events across all of our programming: tree distributions, tree plantings, and special events.
Jacob has been on the team for almost three years, and he plays an essential role within our organization. Jacob is always happy to work alongside our local community, and he also has extensive knowledge in trees, Sonoran desert landscaping, and water harvesting! Everyone please wish Jacob a Happy Birthday in the comments! 🥳🎂

Fun Fact Friday! This is the Mulga tree (Acacia aneura). If you’re planting Mulga in a tighter spot with utilities above and still need to meet city tree planting requirements, this tree is a great option! Originating from Australia, Mulgas are commonly planted all over the Valley—let’s learn more about this cool tree:

🌿Mulgas are an excellent desert tree! Similar to the mesquite tree, the Mulga tree has an unusually long tap root, helping it to withstand long periods of drought.

🌿They grow up to about 20 feet tall, have bright yellow blooms, and they have needle-like leaves which appear as almost a silver-grey color.

🌿Loving full sun, being very low-water use, and drought tolerant, Mulgas are overall VERY hardy trees.

🌿They are good for borders, accents, and as you can see it this photo—great as street trees!

🌿Most Mulgas bloom between March to October; After heavy rain, spikes of small bright-yellow flowers appear, as seen these photos—which were taken after one of our recent monsoons!

🌿Do you have a Mulga tree or know of one nearby? Let us know in the comments!
